Chapter 5 - The Fall of the Titan

The sudden appearance of federal law enforcement officers marching purposefully across the stage brought Gavin’s soaring victory speech to an abrupt, screeching halt.
The applause in the auditorium died instantly, replaced by a suffocating, dead silence. Camera shutters clicked frantically in the front rows, capturing every bead of sweat that suddenly popped up on Gavin’s forehead.
Gavin blinked rapidly, forcing a strained, nervous smile as he leaned back into his microphone. “Ah… it appears we have a minor, ah, security delegation joining us on stage. Our federal partners always love to be part of historic moments, don’t they?”
He tried to chuckle, but nobody in the audience laughed.
Marcus Vance, the Crestview managing director sitting right beside him, didn’t smile at all. He slowly folded his hands on the glass table, pushed his chair back a few inches, and looked at Gavin with undisguised pity.
The lead federal agent—a tall, imposing man with graying temples and piercing blue eyes—stopped directly in front of the table, pulling a folded document from his breast pocket.
“Gavin Pierce?” the agent asked, his voice echoing loudly through the auditorium's amplification system.
“Yes?” Gavin squeaked, his voice cracking slightly before he cleared his throat and puffed out his chest. “Look, whatever this is, it’s a mistake. I am the CEO of SwiftFreight, and we are currently finalizing a multi-billion-dollar investment with—.”
“Gavin Pierce, Mason Miller, and Charlotte Gable,” the federal agent interrupted smoothly, unfurling the arrest warrant. “You are hereby placed under federal arrest for wire fraud, securities fraud, conspiracy to embezzle corporate funds, falsification of regulatory disclosures, and interstate financial collusion.”
The entire convention center erupted into sheer, chaotic noise. Reporters shouted questions over one another, flashbulbs blinded the stage, and murmurs of shock rippled through the corporate executives in the front rows.
Backstage, Charlotte Gable dropped her champagne glass, the crystal shattering against the concrete floor as she grabbed her handbag and tried to bolt toward the rear exit—only to find two more federal marshals blocking the doorway.
On stage, Gavin’s face turned the color of spoiled milk. He stood up so fast his chair tipped over backward with a loud crash against the hardwood floor.
“Arrested?!” Gavin shrieked, his voice pitching into a hysterical octave that echoed across the entire PA system. “On what grounds?! You must be out of your minds! I have a 3.2-billion-dollar contract sitting right here on this table! Crestview Partners is my partner! Marcus, tell them! Tell them this is an insane mistake!”
Marcus Vance slowly leaned into his microphone, his voice calm, cold, and dripping with corporate contempt.
“Crestview Partners is not partnering with a criminal enterprise, Mr. Pierce,” Marcus announced clearly into the auditorium. “As of nine o'clock this morning, our forensic accounting division, in conjunction with federal investigators, has uncovered systemic financial fraud, eight million dollars in unauthorized embezzlement from operational reserves, and fraudulent regulatory filings deliberately submitted by your executive team to inflate SwiftFreight’s valuation.”
Gavin staggered backward, his eyes darting wildly across the stage, finally landing on Marcus in sheer terror. “That’s impossible… the audits were clean! Mason handled the books! Mason!”
He spun around looking for his brother-in-law, only to see Mason already being handcuffed by federal agents near the wings, his head bowed in miserable defeat.
“And as for the 3.2 billion dollars,” Marcus continued smoothly, standing up and buttoning his jacket, “Crestview is terminating all negotiations permanently. Furthermore, we are initiating an immediate involuntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy liquidation proceeding against SwiftFreight on behalf of institutional creditors.”
Gavin grabbed the edge of the glass table, his knuckles turning white, his entire world dissolving into a nightmare before millions of viewers watching the live stream. “No… no, this isn’t real! Who did this?! Who orchestrated this?!”
From the front row of the audience, right beneath the blazing stage lights, a solitary figure slowly stood up.
I smoothed down the lapel of my charcoal blazer, stepped past the velvet rope divider, and walked calmly up the metal steps onto the stage. The cameras instantly swiveled to track my movement, projecting my face onto the massive overhead screens for the entire world to see.
Gavin froze. His jaw dropped so low I thought it might detach. He stared at me—his abused, discarded, penniless ex-wife—standing before him on national television, looking like an absolute queen.
“Hello, Gavin,” I said softly, stepping up to the center microphone. “You always said I clung to you because I had nothing of my own. But you forgot one tiny, insignificant detail about who I really am.”
Gavin stared at me, his eyes bloodshot, his breath coming in ragged gasps as the pieces finally clicked together in his shattered brain.

“Sabrina…?” he whispered, his voice barely audible over the roaring camera shutters. “You… you’re not…”
“I am Sabrina Miller,” I said, my voice cutting through the silent auditorium like a diamond blade. “And my father owns Crestview.”
