Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Empire

The flashbulbs in the auditorium strobed like lightning, casting jagged white reflections across the glass table where Gavin Pierce stood paralyzed. His hands gripped the edge of the podium so tightly his knuckles resembled polished marble.
“You… you set this up,” Gavin whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of disbelief and blind rage. He took a staggering step toward me, forgetting for a fraction of a second that two federal agents were standing just inches behind him. “You planned all of this! You played the poor, helpless victim for six years just to tear my life down?!”
“I didn't play anything, Gavin,” I said, my voice echoing evenly through the convention center’s sound system. “You built a house of cards out of lies, debt, and stolen money. All I did was remove the foundation.”
Before Gavin could lunge further, a heavy hand clamped down firmly on his shoulder. The lead federal agent spun him around with clinical precision, snapping the heavy steel cuffs around his wrists with a sharp, metallic click.
“Gavin Pierce, you have the right to remain silent,” the agent recited calmly, ignoring Gavin’s frantic thrashing. “Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”
Across the stage, Charlotte Gable was already in handcuffs, sobbing loudly as a female marshal escorted her toward the rear service elevator. Her designer red dress rustled awkwardly against the industrial carpet, a pathetic contrast to the arrogant smirk she had worn in our kitchen just days earlier. Mason, meanwhile, kept his head bowed low, staring at the floor as he was led out behind her, his dream of a sheltered fortune permanently shattered.
Marcus Vance stepped up to the podium beside me, sliding a thick brown leather folder across the glass table right in front of the empty seat where Gavin had been sitting a moment before.
“For the record,” Marcus announced into the microphone, addressing the pack of stunned journalists and financial analysts who were furiously typing on their laptops, “Crestview Partners has formally notified the Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Attorney’s Office of systemic corporate malfeasance at SwiftFreight. All executive assets, secondary accounts, and offshore holdings linked to the principals are now under federal seizure.”
The auditorium erupted into chaos once more. Microphones were thrust forward, and reporters shouted questions over one another, their voices blending into an unintelligible wall of sound.
I didn’t stay to watch Gavin being dragged off the stage in disgrace. I turned around, walked down the metal steps, and headed straight toward the private exit reserved for Crestview executives, flanked by Arthur Vance and two security guards.

As the heavy steel doors began to close, shutting out the glaring lights of the media circus, I caught one final glimpse of Gavin. He was screaming my name, his face twisted in absolute terror, realizing too late that the woman he thought he could crush with a belt and a forced signature was the sole heir to the very empire he had tried to conquer.
