Chapter 4 - The Grand Illusion

Thursday morning arrived with crisp, brilliant autumn sunlight cutting through the Minneapolis high-rises.
By 8:30 AM, the grand ballroom of the Minneapolis Convention Center was packed to absolute capacity. Over five hundred financial analysts, corporate executives, journalists from the Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, and local dignitaries sat in rows of velvet-cushioned chairs, murmuring excitedly beneath giant LED screens displaying the glowing corporate logo: SWIFTFREIGHT: LOGISTICS FOR THE GLOBAL FUTURE.
Backstage in the VIP Green Room, the atmosphere was electric with champagne and self-congratulatory laughter.
Gavin Pierce stood before the full-length mirror, adjusting his custom-tailored Brioni suit, his hair slicked back with expensive pomade. He looked every bit the billionaire titan—confident, handsome, and utterly untouchable. Standing beside him in a stunning red designer dress was Charlotte Gable, holding a flute of champagne and giggling at something Mason, the CFO, was whispering into her ear.
“Can you believe it, babe?” Gavin chuckled, wrapping an arm around Charlotte’s waist and kissing her cheek. “Three point two billion dollars. By this afternoon, our market cap will break ten billion, and the board is already talking about expanding our operations into Europe. And the best part? That dead weight ex-wife of mine is sitting in some dingy studio apartment right now, realizing she walked away with literally nothing.”
Mason laughed loudly, clinking his champagne glass against Gavin’s. “I told you, Gav! Women like Sabrina only understand force. You put the fear of God into her with that belt and those fake loan documents, and she folded like a cheap tent. Not a single penny of liability attached to us, and all her personal assets legally transferred to the corporate pool.”
“Speaking of which,” Charlotte purred, running a manicured hand over Gavin’s lapel. “Once the press conference is over and the wire transfer clears from Crestview, I want us to fly to Maui on the private jet. No distractions. Just us.”
“Consider it done,” Gavin grinned, his chest swelling with megalomaniacal pride.
Out front, the house lights dimmed, and the opening chords of an introductory corporate video echoed through the booming sound system. The narrator’s voice boomed over the speakers, praising SwiftFreight’s meteoric rise, its visionary leadership, and the historic partnership with Crestview Partners.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” the master of ceremonies announced into his headset mic, his voice dripping with polished enthusiasm. “Please put your hands together for the CEO and founder of SwiftFreight, Mr. Gavin Pierce, alongside our distinguished guest and managing director representing Crestview Partners!”
Applause thundered through the auditorium as the heavy side curtains parted. Gavin strode out onto the stage with a triumphant, charismatic swagger, waving to the flashing cameras and the cheering crowd. Beside him walked Marcus Vance—one of Crestview’s senior managing directors, standing in for my father—wearing a polite, utterly unreadable smile.
They took their seats at the polished glass panel in the center of the stage, flanked by microphones and twin digital teleprompters. Behind them, a massive screen displayed the official partnership banner.
Gavin leaned into the microphone, his voice dripping with practiced humility and triumphant pride.
“Thank you, ladies and gentlemen,” Gavin began, beaming out at the sea of reporters. “Today marks a historic milestone not just for SwiftFreight, but for global logistics. For years, critics doubted our vision, questioned our growth, and underestimated our resilience. But through relentless hard work, strategic discipline, and uncompromising leadership, we have proven that—.”
He paused, glancing off-stage toward the wings, expecting to see the oversized ceremonial check being brought out by the staff.

Instead, out from the backstage shadows stepped a figure wearing a sharp charcoal business suit, carrying a thick leather briefcase and accompanied by two men in dark federal windbreakers bearing large yellow letters across the back: U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE – OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL.
