Chapter 10 - Blood and Inheritance

The damp air of the subterranean chamber froze completely. Roman stopped dead in his tracks five paces from the edge of the light circle, his hand hovering inches away from the holster at his hip.

“Marcus,” Roman said, his voice terrifyingly calm, carrying the heavy weight of a predator cornering its prey. “Twenty years hiding in the sewer like a rat, and this is how you make your comeback? Threatening a three-year-old child?”

The skeletal figure slowly lowered the heavy wool scarf from his face, revealing a web of jagged, disfiguring burn scars that twisted his mouth into a permanent, mocking sneer. Marcus D’Angelo glared across the concrete with eyes burning with decades of pure, unadulterated hatred.

“Your father stole my name, my seat on the Commission, and my life,” Marcus hissed, pressing the blade a fraction closer to Sophie’s shoulder, drawing a tiny droplet of crimson against her jacket. “He threw me into this concrete tomb and left me to rot in the dark while you and your mother lived in luxury upstairs. I didn't steal your daughter for ransom, Roman. I stole her to show you what it feels like to have your entire world hollowed out from the inside.”

Sophie let out a soft, frightened sniffle, her tiny voice breaking the heavy tension. “Daddy?...”

Roman’s chest heaved. Every instinct in his body screamed to draw his weapon and put a bullet between Marcus’s eyes, but the blade resting against his daughter’s jacket kept his hands locked in place. He couldn't risk a millimeter of error.

“She’s a child, Marcus,” Roman said, taking a slow, calculated half-step forward. “She has nothing to do with what my father did to you twenty years ago. If you want the throne, if you want the D’Angelo name back—take me. Let her go.”

Marcus let out a harsh, barking laugh that echoed hollowly off the damp brick walls. “You think I want a throne built on lies and stolen ledgers? I want you to feel the agony of watching everything you love burn down to ash, exactly like I did!”

He raised the knife higher, his scarred face twisting into a manic frenzy.

Before Marcus’s arm could complete its downward arc, a sharp, muffled thwip echoed from the shadows behind a stack of rusted iron pipes across the chamber.

A heavy steel combat knife hurled with pinpoint precision flashed through the air, burying itself hilt-deep directly into Marcus’s right shoulder.

Marcus screamed in agony, his grip on the hunting knife instantly failing as the weapon clattered uselessly against the concrete floor.

From the shadows, Vance emerged, lowering his arm from the throw while three tactical enforcers surged forward like lightning. They tackled Marcus to the ground, pinning his limbs with brutal efficiency and slapping heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

Roman didn't wait for them to finish. He crossed the chamber in two massive strides, dropping to his knees right in front of Sophie. He frantically cut away the plastic zip-ties binding her small wrists, then scooped her fragile, trembling body up into his arms, pulling her tightly against his chest.

“I’ve got you, sweetheart,” Roman whispered, his voice cracking as tears finally spilled over his dark lashes, hot and unheeded against the cold air. “I’ve got you. We’re going home.”

Sophie buried her face in the warm crook of his neck, her tiny arms wrapping fiercely around his collar. “Don't leave me again, Daddy.”

“Never,” Roman vowed, standing up and carrying his daughter out of the dark underground catacombs toward the light of the surface, leaving the sins of the past buried forever in the mud.
