Chapter 5 - The Grandfather’s Secret

The metal stairs groaned under Roman’s heavy boots as he ascended to the glass-walled mezzanine office overlooking the sprawling, chaotic warehouse floor below. Through the reinforced glass, he could see Dante pinned against a shipping crate by Vance and two enforcers, struggling helplessly like a trapped insect.
Roman reached the top landing, shoved open the heavy oak door of the office, and stepped inside.
The room was furnished with heavy mahogany furniture, smelling faintly of stale cigar smoke, old paper, and expensive bourbon. A massive oak desk sat beneath a row of tall, frost-covered windows looking out over the frozen Chicago harbor. Directly behind the desk hung a giant, imposing oil portrait of Salvatore D’Angelo—Roman’s grandfather, the founding patriarch of the syndicate, whose cold, painted eyes seemed to judge everyone who entered the room.
Roman walked straight up to the portrait. Following Dante’s instructions, he grabbed the heavy wooden frame and swung it outward on its concealed hinges.
Tucked into the hollowed-out cavity behind the painting was a heavy, digital wall safe bearing the D’Angelo family crest.
Roman punched in the six-digit combination—the exact date the syndicate was founded in 1952. With a heavy, mechanical click, the steel door swung open, revealing a stack of thick, leather-bound journals and a locked metal lockbox.
He reached inside, bypassing the cash and bearer bonds, and pulled out the topmost journal. He flipped open the brittle, yellowed pages.
It wasn't just a ledger of extorted funds or diverted wire transfers. It was a comprehensive, handwritten record dating back over twenty years—detailing every single secret, every suppressed assassination, every corrupt politician, and every internal betrayal managed not just by Dante, but by his own mother, Helena.
And right there, underlined in red ink on a page dated three years ago, was a specific entry that made Roman’s blood run instantly cold.
“Nora Vance pregnancy verified. Child presents a direct threat to the primary succession line. Solution: Fabricate an internal hit threat, force Nora into hiding under the guise of protection, and funnel 50k monthly stipend into Swiss account #448-Omega to maintain total control over both mother and child. Approved by: H.D.”
H.D.
Helena D’Angelo.
She hadn't just been blackmailed by Dante. She had orchestrated the entire separation from the very beginning. She had engineered Nora’s disappearance, manufactured the illusion of a death sentence, and manipulated both sides like pieces on a chessboard to ensure that no outside bloodline could ever dilute the D’Angelo empire.
Roman gripped the edge of the leather journal so hard his knuckles turned completely white, the thick paper tearing beneath his fingers. All these years of hating himself, of wondering what he did wrong, of carrying the phantom grief of a lost family—it had all been a constructed lie designed by the woman who raised him to keep her iron grip on the throne.
He slammed the safe shut, grabbed the lockbox and the journals, and turned sharply toward the door.
As he stepped out onto the glass-walled balcony overlooking the warehouse, his phone suddenly buzzed violently in his inner pocket. He pulled it out, expecting a status report from the perimeter guards.
Instead, it was an encrypted priority alert from the secure private estate where Nora and little Sophie were currently being guarded under heavy lock and key.
Roman swiped the screen, hitting speakerphone.
"Boss," Vance’s voice crackled through the secure line, sounding breathless and laced with immediate, urgent panic. "We have a massive problem at the estate."
May you like
Roman stopped dead in his tracks on the metal landing. "Speak."
"Someone bypassed the outer biometric grid," Vance yelled over the sound of blaring security alarms in the background. "They hit the safe room while you were en route to the pier. Nora is secure... but they took Sophie."
