Chapter 8 - The Ghost in the Foundation

The tension in the East Wing sitting room reached a breaking point as Helena stared up at her son, her chest heaving as the infallible matriarch finally looked like a woman cornered by her own ghosts.
“Marcus,” Helena whispered, the name escaping her lips like a foul taste.
Roman’s brow furrowed. “Marcus? My uncle Marcus died twenty years ago in a warehouse fire across the river. We buried an empty casket.”
“We buried a closed casket because there was nothing left to identify,” Helena corrected, her voice trembling as she sank back down into the velvet chair. “Marcus was the syndicate’s chief engineer before he tried to stage a coup against your father. When your father found out, he didn't kill him—he banished him to the subterranean levels of our old shipping infrastructure, stripping him of his name, his face, and his freedom.”
Roman’s grip on the edge of the table tightened until his knuckles turned white. “You kept my uncle alive underneath our own feet? For twenty years?”
“He knew every blueprint, every secret foundation, and every hidden drainage tunnel built during the founding days of the D’Angelo empire,” Helena explained, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “When Dante started sniffing around for leverage against us three years ago, Marcus must have made contact with him from the shadows. Marcus didn't care about Dante’s petty turf wars. He wanted revenge against our bloodline. And when he realized you had a daughter... he knew exactly where to strike to break you completely.”
Roman stepped back, his mind racing through the tactical implications with cold, clinical precision. If Marcus was alive and operating out of the abandoned sub-city beneath the Chicago harbor, he didn't just have a hideout—he had an entire subterranean fortress built out of the family's oldest secrets.
“Vance,” Roman spoke into his lapel communicator, his voice cutting through the secure frequency.
“Go ahead, Boss,” Vance responded instantly.
“Pull up the pre-1970 architectural blueprints of the old municipal waterworks connected to Pier 44. Marcus is down there. He has Sophie.”
“On it, Boss. I’ve got the tactical strike teams mobilizing at the drainage access point near Lake Michigan right now. Do we take him alive?”
Roman’s dark eyes locked onto the glowing embers in the fireplace, a cold, unyielding resolve hardening in his chest.

“Bring me my daughter,” Roman said softly. “And leave the rest to me.”
