Chapter 9 - Descent into the Catacombs

The rusted iron grate screeched in protest as Vance kicked it outward, sending a cascade of frozen slush tumbling down into the pitch-black abyss of the old municipal drainage tunnel beneath Lake Michigan. The air rising from the subterranean shaft was thick with the smell of damp concrete, stagnant river water, and decades of forgotten decay.

Roman didn't hesitate. He pulled a high-lumen tactical flashlight from his belt, flicked on the blinding beam, and dropped six feet down into the freezing muck of the tunnel floor. Behind him, a dozen elite enforcers in tactical gear dropped down in absolute silence, their suppressed assault rifles held at the ready.

“Thermal imaging shows a heat signature approximately four hundred yards down this main conduit, heading toward the old pumping station,” Vance reported, tapping rapidly on his ruggedized tablet as he checked his compass. “It matches the layout of the sub-basement bunker Marcus used to engineer.”

“Move out,” Roman ordered in a low murmur.

They advanced through the labyrinthine concrete tubes in a tight, military-grade formation. The only sounds were the squelch of heavy boots in the shallow runoff water and the steady drip of moisture from the reinforced brick archways overhead. The tunnels were a graveyard of Chicago’s criminal history—a hidden underworld where bodies were dissolved in acid, stolen cash was stashed during federal crackdowns, and family betrayals were buried where the sun never shone.

After ten minutes of silent marching, the narrow concrete tube opened up into a massive, cavernous underground chamber that had once served as a auxiliary pump station during the 1930s.

In the center of the chamber, illuminated by a single flickering halogen bulb hanging from a frayed cord, stood a makeshift camp surrounded by computer monitors, wiretaps, and security feeds projecting live images of the D’Angelo estate upstairs.

And sitting bound to a metal chair near the center of the room was three-year-old Sophie, clutching her frayed rabbit toy, her little eyes wide with tearful confusion.

Standing behind her, holding a heavy hunting knife loosely against her small shoulder, was a gaunt, skeletal figure wrapped in a tattered gray trench coat, his face half-concealed by a heavy wool scarf and deep shadow.

“Step any closer, nephew,” a raspy, sandpaper voice echoed off the damp concrete walls, “and the girl joins your father in the dirt.”
