Chapter 2 - The Archive

The mahogany doors of Adrian’s private study were blown open when he reached the landing, splintered around the reinforced smart-lock like dry kindling. The acrid scent of ozone and melted circuitry hung thick in the air. Someone had bypassed the biometric keypad with a localized electromagnetic pulse generator—military-grade tech that civilian security systems couldn't easily deflect.

Adrian slipped through the shattered threshold, his pistol raised, sweeping the room with cold precision.

The floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, usually immaculate, stood undisturbed. The antique mahogany desk sat centered beneath the grand crystal chandelier, its surface gleaming under the moonlight. But the hidden wall panel—the biometric vault housing his most sensitive archives—was gaping open, its internal hard drives ripped out with brutal efficiency.

Except for one thing left glowing softly on the desk.

A portable encrypted terminal. Its screen pulsed with a single flashing green cursor.

Adrian didn't holster his weapon as he approached the desk. He kept his eyes locked on the dark corners of the study, listening for the softest scrape of a shoe or the click of a hammer. But the room was dead silent, save for the hum of the terminal.

He reached out with his left hand and tapped the spacebar.

The screen flickered, illuminating the dim room in a harsh, cold luminescence. A live video feed appeared, streaming from a camera hidden somewhere inside the estate.

It wasn't a security camera. The angle was too low, too intimate.

It was coming from the guest wing. Specifically, from the hallway right outside the room where Dr. Grant was treating Claire and Lily.

Adrian’s breath hitched. On the screen, two masked figures dressed in matte-black tactical gear stood silently outside the closed oak door. One of them held a compressed pneumatic breaching tool against the frame.

They didn't come to steal my files, Adrian realized with a sickening spike of adrenaline. They came to finish what they started.

He slammed his fist onto the edge of the desk, his finger flying to his comms earpiece, praying the signal jammer had cleared. "Michael! Get away from the door! Michael, do you copy?!"

Silence. Then, a harsh burst of static.

On the video feed, the lead operative raised his hand, counting down with his fingers. Three. Two. One.

Adrian didn't wait to see the breach. He spun on his heel, vaulted over the back of a leather armchair, and sprinted out of the study, abandoning caution for raw, explosive speed. He took the grand staircase three steps at a time, his boots slamming into the wooden risers, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped animal.

If they touch Lily... if they lay a single finger on Claire...

He hit the ground floor at a dead sprint, cutting sharply through the portrait gallery and toward the staff wing. The hallway was dark, the overhead smart-bulbs flickering and dying one by one as a rolling blackout swept through the estate’s power grid.

Total darkness swallowed him.

Adrian slowed his pace instantly, sliding against the cool plaster wall, his night-adjusted eyes scanning the gloom. He dropped his stance, holding the Sig Sauer tight to his chest, relying on sound and spatial memory to guide his steps.

Ahead of him, a dull orange flash illuminated the corridor.

Bang.

The concussive blast of a flash-bang grenade tore through the air, followed by the splintering crash of heavy oak doors giving way under pressure. High-pitched screaming pierced the ringing in Adrian’s ears—Lily’s voice, raw and terrified.

"No! Leave us alone!"

"Shut the kid up," a gruff, muffled voice barked from inside the room.

Adrian rounded the corner, his vision swimming from the residual glare of the flash-bang. Through the haze of white smoke pouring out of the doorway, he saw a tactical operative dragging a struggling, sobbing Lily away from the bed, while a second operative had Dr. Grant pinned face-down against the floor with a combat boot planted firmly between his shoulder blades.

Claire was still unconscious on the bed, her chest rising and falling in shallow, desperate rhythms.

"Drop your weapons!" Adrian roared, stepping through the shattered doorway, his pistol locked onto the center mass of the operative holding Lily.

The man holding the child froze, his tactical visor turning slowly toward Adrian. Instead of panicking, a slow, cruel smirk spread across the man's exposed jawline.

"Mr. Moretti," the operative sneered, shifting his grip so that a ceramic combat blade pressed gently against the side of Lily’s small neck. "Mr. Kane sends his regards. He said you’d look good on your knees."

Adrian’s finger hovered over the trigger, his entire world narrowing down to the sharp edge of that blade resting against a terrified little girl’s skin.
