Chapter 9 - The Ledger’s Price

The mercenaries whirled around in unison, their assault rifles snapping up toward the mezzanine stairs with terrifying speed. But Kane held up a single gloved hand, gesturing for them to hold their fire. A slow, infuriating smile spread across his face as he turned to face Adrian.

"Adrian," Kane said, taking a slow sip of his coffee. "You really are like a bad penny. You just keep turning up when nobody asked for you."

"I'm losing my patience, Kane," Adrian said, descending the metal stairs step by step, his weapon locked firmly on the center of Kane's chest. "Take your men and walk out of here right now, or the next sound you hear won't be a warning."

Claire lifted her head, her eyes wide with a mix of terror and warning. "Adrian, don't! It's a trap—he doesn't want me, he wants the encryption key to the offshore accounts!"

Kane chuckled softly, setting his coffee cup down on an upturned wooden crate with a sharp clink. He walked slowly over to Claire, resting a hand casually on the back of her chair. Lily shrank away from him, letting out a soft, terrified sob that made Adrian’s blood run cold.

"She's a smart girl, Adrian," Kane said smoothly. "She figured out what you apparently haven't. The shipping routes, the docks, the real estate empire along the Gold Coast—none of that matters. The real prize isn't the physical infrastructure. It's the digital vault where the Henderson syndicate stored forty years of untraceable political contributions."

"I don't care about your vault," Adrian said, closing the distance until he was twenty feet away from the group. The mercenaries shifted uneasily, their safety switches clicking off in the dim light.

"Oh, but you should," Kane countered, his smile vanishing, replaced by a cold, predatory glare. "Because that vault contains the proof that the Moretti family fortune was founded on the systematic elimination of every board member who tried to stop your father. Claire has the master key embedded in her personal biometrics. And she won't give it to me."

Adrian locked eyes with Claire across the warehouse floor. For a fraction of a second, communication passed between them—a silent understanding forged in the shared trauma of survival. She didn't have a master key. She had something far more dangerous.

"There is no key, Kane," Claire said, her voice ringing clear and steady through the cavernous space. "My father didn't store the records in a vault. He destroyed them the night your men broke into our home thirty years ago."

Kane’s face darkened instantly. The mask of calm corporate detachment shattered completely, revealing the desperate, ruthless gambler underneath. "You lying bitch! The ledger exists, and you know where it is!"

"If it existed," Adrian added coldly, taking another step forward, "you wouldn't have spent three years hunting a woman who had nothing left to lose."

Kane’s breathing turned ragged. He stepped back from Claire, his hand darting inside his coat toward a hidden shoulder holster. "Kill them all," he snarled at his men. "Leave Moretti for last."

The warehouse erupted into sudden, blinding chaos.

Before the first mercenary could squeeze his trigger, Adrian dropped into a tactical slide behind a heavy steel workbench, returning fire with three rapid shots that shattered the overhead work lights and plunged the center of the warehouse into deep, flickering shadows.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Bullets chewed through the wood of the workbench, sending splinters flying into Adrian’s face. He fired back blindly, hearing the satisfying grunt of a mercenary taking a round to the shoulder.

"Cover the girl!" Adrian roared over the gunfire.

Across the room, Claire kicked her chair backward with all her might, knocking one of the guards off balance just as he raised his rifle toward Lily. The guard stumbled, firing wild into the ceiling.

Adrian vaulted over the workbench, closing the distance to the nearest mercenary, slamming the butt of his pistol into the man’s temple with bone-crushing force.

When the smoke cleared and the echoes of gunfire died away against the corrugated steel walls, three of Kane’s men lay motionless on the concrete.

The fourth mercenary had his arm locked tight around Claire’s neck, a combat knife pressed directly against her throat, while a terrified Lily screamed in horror.

Standing a few feet away, brushing a speck of dust off his expensive suit, Victor Kane pulled a heavy nickel-plated revolver from his coat and pointed it straight at Adrian’s chest.
