Chapter 6 - The Federal Shadow

The red emergency lights washed Special Agent Sarah Vance’s face in a demonic crimson hue as she lowered her service weapon slightly, though her eyes remained locked on the chaos in the foyer. Beneath her, Victor Kane coughed wetly against the splintered wood of the dining table, his fingers clawing weakly at Adrian’s forearm before letting out a sharp, theatrical wheeze.

"Special Agent Vance," Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave as he maintained his downward pressure on Kane. "You’ve got terrible timing, or a very short memory. The last time a DOJ badge crossed these gates without an appointment, it belonged to a man who ended up resigning in disgrace before the month was out."

Vance didn't flinch. She stepped forward, her tactical boots clicking sharply against the shattered crystal littering the marble floor. "Times change, Moretti. And so do federal priorities. Get off him."

"Ask her whose signature is on that warrant, Adrian," Claire’s voice cut through the tension from behind him. She was standing tall now, wrapped in her blanket, her face pale but her eyes burning with an icy, inherited fury. She pointed a trembling finger straight at the silver-haired federal agent. "Ask her if that paper came from a district judge or a private ledger in Kane's offshore accounts."

Vance’s gaze snapped toward Claire, a flicker of genuine irritation crossing her hardened features. "Miss Henderson. We've been looking for you for three years. It's fortunate you decided to surface right in the middle of a federal takedown."

"Takedown?" Adrian let out a dry, humorless laugh. He slowly released Kane, standing up to his full six-foot-three frame, though he kept his body positioned deliberately between the federal agents and the group behind him. "You didn't arrive to execute a warrant, Sarah. You arrived on schedule to collect."

Kane rolled onto his side, coughing violently as he adjusted his crushed silk tie. He looked up at Vance with a look that wasn't panic, but rather the irritated glare of two business partners whose private meeting had been interrupted by a clumsy employee.

"You took your sweet time, Sarah," Kane rasped, accepting a hand up from one of the tactical officers. He dusted off his jacket, regaining his composure with terrifying speed. "Mr. Moretti here was just learning about the realities of modern commerce."

Adrian didn't blink. "You're standing in a private estate under false pretenses backed by forged jurisdiction, Kane. The moment my lawyers ping the federal circuit court in Springfield, your little warrant turns into expensive toilet paper."

"Assuming your lawyers ever wake up," Vance said smoothly. She motioned with her head toward the courtyard doors. Two more tactical agents stepped inside, flanked not by local deputies, but by private security operatives wearing unmarked black uniforms—Kane’s private army, dressed up in borrowed federal gear.

The horrifying truth clicked into place in Adrian's mind. It wasn't just a corrupt judge or a bought-off agent. The Department of Justice task force had been entirely hollowed out from the inside, replaced by mercenaries wearing badges bought and paid for by the Kane Corporation.

"Secure the girl," Vance ordered, stepping forward with her handcuffs unclipped from her tactical belt. "And bring the ledger."

Lily whimpered, retreating back toward Dr. Grant, who instinctively threw his arms out to shield her. Claire stepped in front of them both, her jaw set. "You'll have to go through us."

"That can be arranged," Kane smiled coldly, stepping toward Vance’s side.

Adrian’s hand slid slowly down toward his hip, calculating the angles, the odds, the distance to the hidden panic room corridor. But before he could make his move, the estate's main master terminal—the one glowing on the desk upstairs—suddenly bypassed its local block and blasted a high-frequency audio transmission across every speaker in the mansion.

The voice that echoed through the foyer wasn't automated. It was crisp, urgent, and belonged to Vance’s actual superior—the real Assistant Attorney General in Washington, D.C.

“Special Agent Vance, this is Command. Your field unit’s GPS coordinates have triggered an automated integrity alert. Step away from the Moretti estate immediately. You are operating outside your jurisdiction.”

Vance froze, her hand hovering over her cuffs as the color drained from her face.

Kane's eyes widened. "Cut the feed!" he barked.

But the voice on the speaker only grew louder, backed by the rising sirens of actual federal units approaching the estate gates from the lake road.

"Looks like your paperwork just expired, Sarah," Adrian whispered, a dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Now, drop your weapons, or you won't even make it to the squad cars."
