Chapter 4 - The Confession

Victor Kane didn't look like a monster. At fifty, with silver-streaked hair, a bespoke Italian wool suit, and an expression of serene indifference, he looked like a philanthropist stepping out of a high-end art gallery. He rested both hands on the silver crook of his umbrella, watching Adrian approach with Claire in Michael’s arms and Lily clutched tightly against Adrian’s chest.
"Adrian," Kane said, his voice carrying effortlessly across the grand foyer. "You really should invest in better locks. The ones you have are terribly rustic for a man of your stature."
Adrian stepped past the threshold of the panic shelter, gently setting Lily down inside with Dr. Grant and Claire. "Stay inside," Adrian told the doctor, his eyes locked on Kane. "Don't open this door for anyone except me."
"Adrian, don't go out there—" Michael started, but Adrian slammed the heavy steel door shut, the hydraulic locks engaging with a heavy, definitive thud.
Adrian turned back to face the foyer, his hand resting casually near his holster, though he knew drawing a weapon on Kane here would solve nothing. Kane wouldn't have walked through the front doors of an armed estate alone unless he held all the cards.
"You've got a lot of nerve showing your face here after sending your thugs to terrorize a child," Adrian said, stepping slowly down the marble steps, his voice cold enough to freeze water.
Kane smiled, a thin, humourless stretching of his lips. "Terrorize? Oh, Adrian, you misunderstand. That wasn't terror. That was an introduction. A gentle reminder that the world you built along these docks rests on foundations of sand."
"Why Claire?" Adrian asked, cutting straight to the core of it. "What does a shipping mogul like you want with a woman hiding out in the suburbs?"
Kane sighed softly, stepping toward the center of the foyer and running a gloved hand over the banister. "Claire isn't just a woman hiding out, Adrian. She's the sole surviving heir to the Henderson shipping syndicate. The very syndicate your father systematically dismantled thirty years ago to build the Moretti dynasty."
Adrian stopped mid-step. The name Henderson struck him like a physical blow. It was a ghost from his family's past—a corporate bloodbath buried deep in the archives of Chicago’s maritime history, one that Adrian had spent years trying to distance himself from.
"That's ancient history," Adrian said tightly. "The Henderson group went bankrupt legally."
"Legally?" Kane laughed softly, a sharp, cynical sound. "Bankruptcy is a very polite word for extortion, embezzlement, and a few well-placed accidents. Your father left bodies in his wake, Adrian. And Claire knows every single one of them. She has the ledger—the original financial records proving that the Moretti empire was built on stolen property and blood."
Adrian studied Kane’s face, searching for the lie. But there was none. The pieces of the puzzle suddenly snapped into a terrifying, coherent picture. Why Claire had come to Chicago. Why she was running. Why Victor Kane was so desperate to silence her before she reached a federal prosecutor.
"And you want the ledger for yourself," Adrian deduced, his voice dropping an octave. "You want to use it to blackmail the board, take over my shipping lines, and monopolize the entire northern seaboard."
"I want what’s mine," Kane corrected smoothly, his eyes narrowing. "And more importantly, I want you to hand her over willingly. Because if you don't... well, let's just say my men outside have very little patience left for children."
Adrian’s hand drifted away from his holster. A strange, dangerous calm settled over him. He took two steps closer to Kane, towering over the older man by several inches.
"You think you can threaten my estate, poison an innocent woman, and put your hands on that little girl," Adrian whispered, his voice dangerously soft, "and walk out of these gates alive?"
Kane didn't flinch. Instead, he smiled, pulling a small gold pocket watch from his vest and flipping it open.
"I don't need to walk out, Adrian," Kane said softly. "Because right at this very second, your cargo ships docked at Pier 42 are being boarded by federal agents carrying a very specific, highly classified federal warrant signed by a judge on my payroll."
Kane snapped the watch shut with a sharp click.

"Your empire is being seized, Adrian. And by morning, you won't just be ruined—you'll be an accessory to treason."
