Chapter 10 - The Underground Terminal

The damp, metallic chill of the underground tunnel hit Alessandro like a physical wall. The only illumination came from the harsh, flickering green glow of an improvised computer terminal set up on a folding metal table near the brick archway.

Crouched in front of the glowing screen, furiously typing commands into a modified military-grade deck, was a figure in a dark hoodie.

"Step away from the console," Alessandro commanded, his voice cutting through the hum of the cooling fans like a razor blade.

The typing stopped instantly.

The figure slowly raised their hands, standing up from the folding chair and turning around to face the light.

The hood fell back, revealing a face Alessandro never, in a million years, expected to see.

It wasn't a rival syndicate capo. It wasn't a corrupt politician or a bought-off federal agent.

It was Clara.

Her hair was tied back, her tear-stained vulnerability completely gone, replaced by an expression of cold, calculating intelligence. In her hand, she held an encrypted flash drive blinking with a steady, emerald light.

"You're late, Alessandro," Clara said, her voice entirely devoid of the frightened housekeeper's tremble he had grown accustomed to hearing.

Alessandro kept his pistol leveled steadily at her chest, his mind racing as every piece of the puzzle violently shifted into a terrifying new alignment.

"Clara," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, lethal whisper. "Explain to me why the grieving, terrified mother is holding the keys to my entire empire."

Clara offered a sad, bitter smile, stepping slightly away from the terminal.

"Because my name isn't Clara Bennett," she said softly, the accent she had faked for three years completely vanishing to reveal a sharp, educated northern cadence. "It's Clara Henderson. And thirty years ago, your father murdered mine to steal the very empire you're standing on."

Before Alessandro could process the words, a sharp click echoed from the dark tunnel behind him.

A cold circle of steel pressed firmly against the back of his skull.

"Drop the gun, Alessandro," a familiar voice whispered in his ear. "The game is over."
