Chapter 5 - The Descent

The zip-ties bit cruelly into Alessandro’s wrists as the two enforcers hauled him roughly to his feet and shoved him toward the rusted metal door at the back of the warehouse.

"Move, old man," one of them spat, driving the barrel of a shotgun into Alessandro’s lower back.

Alessandro didn't flinch. His muscles remained coiled like steel cables, his breathing even and controlled. He had survived twenty years in the Chicago underworld by letting men think they had him cornered just moments before he cut their throats.

They dragged him down a steep, winding flight of concrete stairs that descended deep into the old railyard’s sub-basement. The air down here was thick with the smell of stagnant water and damp earth. A single flickering fluorescent bulb overhead illuminated a small brick alcove.

And there, sitting huddled in the corner on an old wool blanket, clutching her knees, was Lily.

Her blue hat was gone, her hair messy, but her wide, terrified eyes locked onto Alessandro the moment he stumbled through the doorway.

"Mister Alessandro?" she whispered, her voice trembling so hard the words barely carried across the room. "Are the bad men going to hurt you too?"

"No, sweetheart," Alessandro said, his voice softening instantly, stripping away every ounce of the cold syndicate boss he was supposed to be. He strained against the heavy plastic ties binding his wrists, trying to step closer to her. "I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."

"Well, well, a touching family reunion," Rossi mocked as he walked down the stairs behind them, holding the detonator loosely in his right hand while pulling a heavy revolver with his left. "Too bad it's rated R for tragedy."

Rossi grabbed Lily by the arm, jerking her up onto her feet despite her terrified gasps. He pressed the cold steel barrel of his revolver directly against her temple.

"Make your choice, Romano," Rossi snarled, his eyes bulging with manic adrenaline. "Do you watch her die right now, or do you take the bullet for her?"

Alessandro’s heart slammed against his ribs. The cold calculation that had guided his entire life vanished, replaced by a singular, blinding clarity. He looked at Lily, remembering the note she had left on his desk—the little girl who had tried to erase herself so her mother wouldn't suffer.

"Take the shot, Salvatore," Alessandro said quietly, lifting his chin.

Rossi’s finger whitened on the trigger.

Before the hammer could drop, the heavy concrete ceiling above them shuddered violently. A deafening roar—like an industrial explosion—tore through the warehouse upstairs, followed by the sound of collapsing iron beams and shattering glass.

Vance’s voice echoed down the stairwell through a bullhorn, cutting through the chaos with absolute authority:

"Federal and syndicate lockdown! Nobody moves, or we bury this entire basement!"
