Chapter 2 - The Mother’s Despair

Clara Bennett looked smaller than ever, huddled on the edge of the leather sofa in Alessandro’s private sitting room. Her face was pale, stained with frantic tears, her hands wringing a damp tissue until the paper shredded.
"I don't know where she went," Clara sobbed, her voice breaking as Alessandro stood over her. "She’s three years old, Mr. Romano. She can't even cross a street by herself. She wouldn't just wander off into the dark unless..." She stopped, her breath catching in her throat as she looked up at him. "Unless she thought she had to."
"She left this on her chair," Alessandro said quietly, holding out the jagged red note.
Clara gasped, covering her mouth with her hands as fresh tears spilled over her lashes. "She heard you. When you said we had twenty-4 hours... she thought you meant her, too. Oh God, my baby..."
"She’s safe," Alessandro lied, though the word tasted like ash in his mouth. In his world, safety was an illusion bought with blood and leverage. "Vance is pulling every contact we have from the Loop to the docks. Nobody takes a child from my estate and breathes clean air for long."
"You don't understand," Clara whispered, grabbing the lapel of his tailored black vest. Her fingers were ice-cold. "It wasn't just random. Last week, Leo... my brother... he was deep in gambling debt with the Outfit's south-side crew. He told me someone was asking questions about who lived in this house. Who had access to your private quarters."
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "Leo."
"He swore he didn't tell them anything important," Clara wept, shaking her head. "But if they knew about Lily... if they knew she could get into your study..."
A heavy knock rattled the door, and Vance slipped into the room, holding a heavily encrypted burner phone. His expression was grim.
"Boss, we tracked a burner signal pinging off a cell tower near the old railyard off Ashland Avenue," Vance reported, keeping his voice carefully neutral in front of Clara. "An anonymous text came through to my private line three minutes ago."
Alessandro stepped away from Clara, his jaw tight. "What does it say?"
Vance handed over the phone.
On the screen, a single photograph had been texted: Lily’s faded blue hat resting on a dirty concrete floor, alongside a typed message.
