Chapter 6 - The Basement Breach

The bullhorn’s metallic echo had barely faded down the concrete stairwell when Salvatore Rossi panicked.
His face twisted from manic triumph into desperate, twitching rage. The cold steel of his revolver barrel pressed harder against Lily’s temple, the child’s small frame shuddering beneath his heavy grip.
"They're bluffing!" Rossi screamed over the distant thunder of collapsing iron beams upstairs. "Move another inch, Romano, and I scatter her brains across this wall!"
Alessandro didn't flinch. Every instinct honed by decades in the Chicago underworld compressed into a single, razor-sharp focus. The plastic zip-ties binding his wrists bit deep into his skin, but his muscles remained loose, coiled like spring steel. He could see the tremor in Rossi’s index finger—the telltale sign of a man whose control was hanging by a frayed thread.
"You won't pull that trigger, Salvatore," Alessandro said, his voice dropping into that dark, hypnotic register that made seasoned capos sweat. "Because the moment you do, Vance won't just bury this basement. He'll feed what's left of you to the river rats before sunrise."
"Shut up! Shut up!" Rossi yelled, his eyes darting toward the winding concrete stairs.
Heavy boots thundered down the steps. A smoke grenade clattered onto the landing above, hissing violently as thick, blinding white clouds billowed down into the alcove, choking the air with the stinging reek of chemical fog.
Alessandro didn't wait for the smoke to clear.
As Rossi’s attention flicked upward toward the stairs, Alessandro launched himself forward, ignoring the zip-ties. He slammed his shoulder directly into Rossi’s midsection, driving the larger man backward against the damp brick wall.
The revolver discharged with a deafening roar, the bullet tearing harmlessly through the concrete ceiling.
Rossi gasped as the wind was forced from his lungs, his grip on Lily loosening instantly. Alessandro caught the little girl mid-fall, sweeping her behind his body just as Rossi swung the heavy barrel of the gun around in a frantic arc.
Before Rossi could recover, a dark silhouette burst through the billowing smoke at the bottom of the stairs. Vance, his face smudged with soot and holding a customized submachine gun, planted a combat boot squarely in Rossi’s chest, sending the rogue captain crashing hard against the floor. The revolver clattered away across the grime.
"Clear!" Vance barked, scanning the alcove before his eyes landed on Alessandro and the child. "Boss, you alright?"
Alessandro held Lily tight against his chest, her small arms wrapped fiercely around his neck, her face buried in the wool of his coat.
"Get her upstairs to Clara," Alessandro ordered, his voice tight with lingering adrenaline as he handed the trembling child over to Vance. "Now."
Vance nodded, scooping Lily into his arms and rushing back up the smoke-filled stairwell.
Alessandro slowly turned his attention back to Rossi, who was groaning on the floor, clutching his bruised ribs. The rogue captain looked up, a bloody, defiant grin stretching across his lips.
"You think... you think I acted alone, Romano?" Rossi wheezed, spitting a mouthful of blood onto the concrete. "The man who gave me the security blueprints... the man who wants your entire empire... he's already inside your inner circle."

Alessandro’s eyes narrowed into black slits as he stepped over the fallen man.
