Chapter 1 - The Footsteps on the Stairs

The slow, rhythmic creak of leather on antique oak overhead sounded like a gavel falling in a silent courtroom.

Dominic Romano’s hand instinctively dropped to the concealed Beretta beneath his coat, his knuckles turning white against the grip. Across the kitchen island, Grace Bennett stood frozen, her arms wrapped protectively around Sophie and Nora, while Olivia shielded herself behind Grace’s left hip. The joyous laughter from moments ago had vanished, replaced by an electric, suffocating tension that made the air hard to breathe.

"Stay behind me," Dominic whispered, his voice a low, lethal hum born from decades of surviving the brutal underbelly of New York.

He didn't wait for Grace to answer. He pivoted on his heel, his dark eyes locked on the shadowy archway leading to the grand staircase in the main foyer. The footsteps were unhurried, deliberate—the stride of someone who walked through this house with absolute ownership, completely unafraid of the mob boss who ruled the city outside its gates.

Step.

Step.

Dominic drew the pistol from his holster, the metal slide clicking with a sharp, lethal metallic snap that echoed off the high marble ceilings.

"Daddy, no!"

Olivia’s small, clear voice pierced the stillness for the first time in two years. Dominic froze, his heart hammering against his ribs not from fear for himself, but from the sound of his eldest daughter speaking his name. He glanced back over his shoulder for a fraction of a second. Olivia was staring at him, her eyes wide with desperate terror.

"He has a knife," Olivia whispered, pointing up toward the landing. "He said he’d cut Mommy's throat again if you looked up."

The blood roared in Dominic’s ears, drowning out every ambient sound in the mansion. Isabelle’s murder in Garden City hadn't been a random drive-by hit by a rival syndicate. It had been an inside job. An execution orchestrated by someone sleeping under the same roof, eating at the same table, walking these halls as a trusted brother.

Dominic whipped back around, raising his weapon toward the staircase as a figure finally stepped out from the shadows of the second-floor landing.
