Chapter 9 - The Broadcast

Dominic’s thumb hovered over the screen, pressing play.
The video feed opened inside a sterile, windowless concrete room—a basement bunker somewhere in the city. Tied securely to a metal chair in the center of the frame was Grace Bennett, her mouth taped shut with industrial duct tape, her eyes wide with terror. Standing behind her, holding a heavy tactical knife against her throat, was a man in an expensive gray suit whose face was half-hidden in the shadows.
The man slowly leaned down toward the camera lens, revealing a cold, aristocratic smile.
"Good evening, Dominic," Frank Callahan’s smooth, cultivated voice echoed from the phone's speaker. "I must hand it to you—you’ve been a very resilient cockroach. Surviving the railyard, breaking Marcus's neck, dragging poor Vincent out of the tunnels. But you forgot one simple rule of New York politics: you never fight the architect."
Dominic’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle ticked furiously in his cheek. "Let her go, Frank. This is between you and me."
"Oh, it is between us," Callahan chuckled softly, stepping back into the light. "But unfortunately, your little housekeeper here decided to play hero and drive your daughters straight into my jurisdiction. Right now, little Olivia, Sophie, and Nora are sitting in a comfortable black van parked outside my district office, waiting for Daddy to make his final appearance."
The screen flickered, splitting into a secondary camera angle showing the inside of a van. Through the grainy night-vision lens, Dominic could see his three daughters huddled together on a bench seat, holding hands tightly, their small faces stained with tears.
"What do you want?" Dominic whispered, every drop of blood in his veins turning to ice.
"Simple," Callahan said, his tone turning businesslike and sharp. "You are going to take your car, drive alone to the Federal Courthouse plaza in Manhattan within forty-five minutes, and publicly confess to every federal racketeering charge on our docket. You take the fall, Dominic. You sign away your entire estate, your syndicates, your legacy—everything. And in exchange, I let the girls and the housekeeper walk free."
"And if I don't?"
"Then I stream the rest of this evening's events live to every news station in the country," Callahan smiled coldly, pressing the flat of the knife slightly against Grace’s neck. "Starting with the nanny, ending with the orphans. Tick-tock, Mr. Romano. Your time starts now."
