Chapter 3 - The Quiet Defiance

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush bone.

Dominic’s mind raced through a thousand tactical scenarios, calculating angles, distances, and reaction times. But with the detonator in Marcus’s hand, the math didn't work. One bullet to Marcus’s chest meant a reflex twitch of a thumb, and his daughters would burn.

"You're a coward, Marcus," Dominic said softly, his voice deadpan, masking the fury boiling beneath his skin. He slowly lowered the muzzle of the Beretta toward the floorboards.

"I'm a survivor," Marcus corrected, descending another three steps. "You got soft, Dom. Ever since you had kids, you forgot what kind of world we live in. You thought you could play family man while running the most ruthless syndicate on the East Coast. It was pathetic to watch."

Behind Dominic in the kitchen doorway, Grace Bennett didn't panic. While Marcus’s attention was entirely fixed on Dominic holding the gun, Grace slowly lowered herself to one eye-level with Sophie, whispering something urgent and silent into the little girl's ear.

Sophie’s eyes flicked toward the heavy oak service door leading down to the underground pantry—a door hidden behind the walk-in refrigerator that only the staff and Dominic knew about.

Grace subtly nodded, giving the girl a gentle nudge.

Without a sound, Olivia grabbed Sophie’s hand, and Sophie grabbed Nora, the three girls slipping backward away from the kitchen archway into the deep shadows of the pantry corridor.

Dominic saw the movement out of the corner of his eye and deliberately shifted his stance, widening his shoulders to block Marcus’s line of sight down the hallway.

"What are you looking at, Dominic?" Marcus frowned, taking another step down. "Drop the piece. All the way. Slide it across the marble."

"I'm dropping it," Dominic said, his voice steady. He crouched slightly and slid the Beretta across the polished stone floor. It skidded to a halt near the base of the staircase.

Marcus chuckled, stepping down to the ground floor, keeping his eyes locked on Dominic while reaching down with his free hand to scoop up the gun.

"Smart man," Marcus sneered, pocketing the Beretta. "Now, here is how this is going to work. You're going to write over your shipping port shares to my offshore holding company by noon. Then, you and I are going to take a little drive to the docks, where you'll announce your retirement due to 'health reasons.' As for the kids—"

Marcus paused, turning his head toward the kitchen.

"Hey! Little girls, come on out—"

Marcus stopped. The kitchen was empty.
