Chapter 2 - The Face in the Shadows

The overhead crystal chandelier cast a brilliant, glittering light over the grand foyer, illuminating the man standing on the top landing.

It wasn't a hitman. It wasn't a rival caporegime.

It was Marcus Vance, Dominic’s chief of security, lifelong confidant, and the man who had personally managed Isabelle’s security detail the day she died.

Marcus wasn't holding a knife. He held a silver-plated cigarette case in one hand, snapping it open with a casual click, his expression entirely devoid of panic. He looked down at Dominic with a slow, chilling smile.

"Well, Dominic," Marcus said, his voice echoing smoothly across the marble. "I told you hiring California psychologists was a waste of money. Kids always talk in the end. You just needed the right atmosphere."

Dominic’s chest tightened so hard it felt like a vise. The Beretta shook slightly in his grip—not from hesitation, but from the sheer, blinding magnitude of the betrayal. Marcus. The man who had stood beside him at Isabelle’s funeral, who had poured him whiskey late into the night, who had sworn on his life to hunt down the bastards who took her.

"You," Dominic choked out, the word tasting like copper and ash. "You killed my wife."

"I protected our investment," Marcus corrected calmly, taking a slow step down the stairs. "Isabelle was getting soft, Dominic. She threatened to take the girls and go to the feds if you didn't walk away from the syndicate. She was going to destroy everything we built. What was I supposed to do? Let a woman unravel twenty years of empire over a guilty conscience?"

"I’ll rip your throat out," Dominic snarled, taking a step toward the stairs.

"Ah, ah, ah," Marcus clicked his tongue, reaching into his tailored jacket and pulling out a small, heavy black box with a red toggle switch. "Don't be hasty, boss. You see, I never trusted your security protocols. This little device is hardwired to the perimeter charges buried beneath the guest house and the main generator grid. One twitch of my thumb, and this entire mansion—along with your precious little girls—becomes a crater."

Dominic stopped dead. His eyes flicked from Marcus’s thumb to the children behind him in the kitchen.

"You wouldn't," Dominic whispered.

"Try me," Marcus smiled coldly. "Drop the gun, Dominic. Let’s talk like business partners."
