Chapter 5 - Federal Intervention

The two federal agents bypassed the gallery without a word, marching straight up to the defense table where Jonathan Reed sat paralyzed in his chair.

The taller agent flipped open a leather folder, resting his hand casually near his sidearm. “Jonathan Reed?”

Jonathan didn't answer. He stared blankly at the polished wood of the table, his empire evaporating before his eyes.

“Mr. Jonathan Reed,” the agent repeated louder, “you are under arrest for wire fraud, tax evasion, perjury, and conspiracy to commit financial fraud against federal lending institutions. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.”

Before Jonathan could process the words, the agent grabbed his arm, yanked him upright out of his chair, and snapped a pair of cold steel handcuffs around his wrists with a sharp click.

“Wait—you can't do this! Do you know who I am?” Jonathan protested, his voice cracking with panic as he was hauled backward toward the exit. “My lawyers—!”

“Your lawyers just abandoned you, Mr. Reed, and the IRS has been auditing your shell companies for six months,” the agent replied smoothly, marching him past the stunned gallery.

Victoria Reed let out a sharp cry, collapsing back into her seat as her son was hauled away in irons. Savannah Blake slipped out of the side exit door so fast she left her designer handbag behind on the wooden bench.

Judge Thomas watched the door close behind the federal agents before turning back to the bench. He looked down at Ethan, who was still clutching his empty hand where the USB drive had been.

“Ethan,” the judge said gently, a rare hint of a smile touching the corners of his mouth. “Where did you learn to download encrypted financial folders from a hidden safe?”

Ethan looked up shyly, glancing at his mother before looking back at the judge. “Dad always left his office door unlocked when he went down to the wine cellar to talk on his phone. I watched him type the numbers into the wall panel once. I knew he was trying to hurt mom, so I copied everything onto my school flashdrive. I hid it in my pencil case.”

Judge Thomas nodded slowly, a look of profound respect crossing his face. “Well, young man, your initiative just saved your family from a grave injustice. But please, leave the criminal investigations to the professionals next time.”

The judge picked up his heavy wooden gavel and brought it down with a resounding crack that signaled the end of one nightmare and the terrifying, uncertain beginning of a brand-new chapter.

“Effective immediately,” Judge Thomas announced, “temporary sole physical and legal custody of Ethan and Mason Carter is awarded to their mother, Olivia Carter. Furthermore, all marital assets, real estate holdings, and corporate accounts currently controlled by Mr. Reed are frozen pending a federal receivership hearing.”

Cheers erupted from the back of the courtroom where Olivia’s legal aid supporters sat.

Olivia dropped her head into her hands and wept—not tears of exhaustion or terror this time, but tears of absolute, overwhelming liberation. She pulled both of her boys into her arms, burying her face in their hair as they hugged her back with all their might.

The nightmare was finally over. Or so she thought.

It wasn't until she stepped outside the courthouse doors into the crisp Chicago air, surrounded by flashing camera lights and reporters shouting questions, that a man in a dark trench coat pushed through the crowd, handed her a heavy manila envelope, and whispered words that made her blood run instantly cold.
