Chapter 9 - The Alleyway Exchange

The damp, freezing air of the South Side alley hit Olivia like a physical wall as she scrambled down the last rungs of the rusted fire escape ladder, her boots slamming hard onto the wet asphalt.

"Keep running! Don't look back!" Olivia gasped, grabbing both boys by their hands and tearing around the corner into the maze of dimly lit brick tenements.

Behind them, the metal fire escape rattled loudly as the two pursuers dropped down into the alley. Shouts echoed off the brick walls, but the twisting labyrinth of narrow Chicago streets gave Olivia a crucial advantage; she had grown up in these neighborhoods before Jonathan’s money had locked her away in a Westchester mansion.

She ducked into an abandoned loading dock, pulling the boys deep into the shadows behind a stack of wooden pallets. They held their breath, listening to the heavy boots pounding past the entrance of the alley, the voices fading away into the distance.

Once the sounds of pursuit died down completely, Olivia slumped against the cold brick wall, her lungs burning, her hands shaking uncontrollably.

"Mom... are we going to die?" Mason sobbed quietly, burying his face in her coat.

"No, buddy. Never," Olivia whispered fiercely, kissing the top of his head while her mind raced to figure out their next move. She couldn't go back to her cousin’s apartment. It was compromised. She couldn't call her legal aid attorney because her phone was still turned off and likely being tracked.

She reached into her coat pocket to make sure the envelope's contents were still secure. Her fingers brushed against the cold metal keys and the stack of checks.

Then she felt something else—a small, hard plastic object she hadn't noticed before.

Pulling it out under the dim orange glow of a distant streetlamp, she realized it was a miniature USB drive attached to the key ring the man in the trench coat had given her. It wasn't just a physical envelope; it was a digital lifeline.

"Hold on," Olivia muttered to herself. She pulled out her dead phone, popped the battery cover off and back on, and powered it up. It flickered to life, displaying a single new text message from an unknown number: Plugin the drive at the public terminal on Adams Street. Type the code: 7719.

She looked down at her sons. They were cold, terrified, and exhausted. But staying here meant walking straight into a trap.

"Boys, we have one more stop to make," Olivia said, her voice hardening with absolute, unyielding resolve. "We're going to finish this tonight."
