Chapter 6 - The Man in the Trench Coat

The flashing camera strobes cut through the autumn twilight like lightning bolts, blinding Olivia as she tried to shield Ethan and Mason against her coat. Reporters swarmed the courthouse steps like a restless ocean, shouting questions about Jonathan’s arrest, the federal raid, and the sudden collapse of the real estate empire.
Amidst the roaring confusion, a tall figure in a dark, weather-beaten trench coat materialized directly in front of her. He didn’t shout like the journalists. He didn’t thrust a microphone in her face. He simply stepped into her path, blocking her exit toward the curb, and reached inside his coat.
Olivia recoiled, throwing her arms protectively around her boys. "Get away from us! Leave us alone!"
The man ignored her panic. His face was weathered, lined with deep creases, and his eyes carried a heavy, solemn gravity. With two fingers, he slid a thick, heavy manila envelope out from under his arm and pressed it firmly into Olivia’s trembling hands.
"Mrs. Carter," the man said, his voice a low, raspy whisper that barely carried over the din of the reporters. "Don't trust the federal receivership. And don't sign any asset transfer documents handed to you by the court-appointed trustees tomorrow morning."
Olivia clutched the heavy envelope to her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Who are you? What is this?"
"An insurance policy," the man replied cryptically, pulling his fedora down lower over his forehead. "Jonathan wasn't the only one hiding money, Mrs. Carter. And the people backing him... they aren't done yet."
Before Olivia could demand an answer, a sudden surge of aggressive camera crews pushed the man backward into the surging crowd. When Olivia blinked and strained her eyes through the glare of the flashes, he had completely vanished into the sea of bodies, leaving behind only the cold, heavy weight of the manila envelope in her hands.
"Mom?" Mason asked, his voice shaking as he tugged at her sleeve. "Who was that man? Are we still in danger?"
"No, sweetie. No, we're safe," Olivia lied smoothly, though her own hands were ice-cold. She grabbed both boys’ hands tighter, pushing her way through the remaining barrier of reporters toward the waiting legal aid car idling at the corner.

As she slammed the car door shut, locking it automatically, her legal aid attorney—who was driving—looked back through the rear-view mirror with a worried expression. "Olivia, are you alright? You look like you've seen a ghost. Who was that?"
Olivia didn't answer right away. Instead, she looked down at the thick envelope resting on her lap. Scrawled across the front in messy, rushed handwriting were three words that sent a chill straight down her spine: OPEN ONLY AFTER MIDNIGHT.
