Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Past

The mention of the 'man with the silver eye' hit Ramon like a physical blow. The air in his lungs turned to ice.
Years ago, during the bloody turf wars that cemented the Ortega family's dominance across the coast, Ramon had faced Viktor Vance—a ruthless lieutenant known across the underworld for a prosthetic glass eye polished to a chilling, reflective silver. Viktor had supposedly burned to death in a warehouse explosion orchestrated by Ramon himself. His body had never been recovered, but the authorities and the underworld alike had accepted the charred ruins as his final grave.
If Viktor was alive, it meant the entire foundation of Ramon's empire was built on a lie. And worse—it meant this woman, suspended from the ancient oak tree with a Calderon crest clutched in her fist, was part of a much larger, highly coordinated conspiracy designed to draw Ramon out of his stronghold.
"Boss," Matteo warned, stepping up close and lowering his voice. "We've got movement on the ridge half a mile back. Scanners are picking up encrypted radio frequencies. Someone is tracking our comms or monitoring the vehicles."
Ramon straightened up instantly, the momentary softness vanishing from his expression, replaced entirely by the hardened mask of a cartel boss preparing for war.
"Get her into the back seat of the second car," Ramon ordered, gesturing toward the unconscious woman. "Diego, you drive. Victor, you take the passenger seat and keep your weapon hot. Matteo, ride with me in the lead car. We're moving out—now."
"What about me?" Lily asked, her voice cracking as she looked up at Ramon with desperate eyes.
Rango hesitated for half a second before scooping her up into his arms and setting her carefully in the back seat beside her unconscious mother. "You stay right here with her. You're safe with us."
He slammed the trunk shut, the heavy thud echoing sharply through the misty morning air. He slid into the driver's seat of the lead car, Matteo slamming his door shut an instant later. The engines roared to life in unison, a deep, aggressive growl that shattered the silence of the forest road.
"Talk to me, Matteo," Ramon said, shifting the car into gear and spinning the steering wheel hard, executing a sharp U-turn on the narrow asphalt.
Matteo’s fingers flew across a ruggedized laptop mounted on the dashboard, the screen casting a pale blue glow over his sharp features. "Frequencies are bouncing off local relay towers, Boss. It's not standard police chatter. It’s military-grade encryption. They’re tracking our transponders."
"Kill the transponders," Ramon snapped, accelerating smoothly as the black cars surged down the winding mountain road, tires hissing against the wet pavement.
"Done," Matteo replied, tapping a final key. "But Boss... look at the GPS telemetry."
Ramon glanced sideways at the screen. A digital map of the county was rendered in glowing green lines. But superimposed over the normal geography was a flashing red radius—a perimeter that was rapidly closing in around them from three different directions.
"They didn't just ambush us in the woods," Matteo said, his voice tightening with tension. "They anticipated our route. They knew we'd take this exit off the highway. This whole stretch of forest... it's a designated kill zone."

Right as Matteo finished the sentence, the forest canopy above them erupted.
A high-pitched whistle cut through the roar of the engines, followed instantly by a deafening explosion just fifty yards ahead of them on the winding road. A massive pine tree, sheared cleanly in half by an explosive charge, crashed down directly across their path, blocking the road with a tangled web of splintered wood and pine needles.
