Chapter 4 - The Kill Zone

Ramon slammed hard on the brakes. The lead car skidded across the wet asphalt, burning rubber before coming to a violent, jarring halt inches from the fallen timber. Behind them, Diego’s car screeched to a halt, maintaining a tight, defensive buffer.
"Ambush!" Matteo yelled, drawing his weapon and scanning the dense tree line.
Smoke billowed from the blast site ahead, mixing with the low-lying fog to create an impenetrable wall of gray haze. Through the haze, movement flickered—dark figures dropping from the lower branches of the trees on both sides of the road, clad in matte-black tactical gear with their faces hidden behind dark balaclavas.
"Out of the car! Now!" Ramon ordered, kicking his door open and rolling out low, his hand instantly wrapping around the grip of his customized firearm.
Gunfire erupted before his boots even hit the wet pavement.
Crack-crack-crack!
Bullets sparked violently against the chrome grill of the lead car, shattering the side mirror into a thousand glittering fragments. Matteo dove out beside Ramon, returning fire with disciplined, measured bursts toward a cluster of boulders near the tree line.
"Diego! Secure the back seat!" Ramon shouted over the deafening cacophony of automatic gunfire, pressing his back flat against the passenger door of the sedan. "Get Lily and her mother off the road! Move!"
From the second car, Diego and Victor reacted with the ruthless efficiency of elite operators. Diego kicked open the rear door, shielding Lily with his own body as he pulled her out of the vehicle and shoved her toward the ditch alongside the road. Victor yanked open the opposite door, unbuckling the unconscious woman and hauling her out over his shoulder like a sack of grain, diving headfirst into the muddy depression just as a volley of suppressing fire chewed through the roof of the sedan.
Ramon returned fire, double-tapping a shadow moving behind a fern-choked embankment. The figure dropped instantly with a heavy thud. But more kept coming. They weren't local thugs or amateur hitmen; they moved with synchronized precision, bounding from cover to cover, tightening the noose around the stranded convoy with terrifying coordination.
"Boss, we're pinned!" Matteo yelled over the gunfire, reloading his magazine with practiced speed. "They've got high ground on both ridges! If we stay here, we're fish in a barrel!"
Ramon’s dark eyes scanned the terrain. To their left was a steep, rocky ravine choked with briars and rushing white water far below. To their right was an impassable wall of granite cliffs. The road was blocked in both directions. It was a classic box—designed by someone who knew Ramon’s tactical habits down to the letter.
"We move down the ravine!" Ramon shouted decision-making absolute. "Victor, can you carry her?"
"Got her, Boss!" Victor yelled back from the ditch, his face smeared with mud, holding the unconscious woman tightly against his chest while keeping his free hand clamped around Lily’s small wrist.
"Matteo, lay down suppressing fire on the upper ridge! Buy us five seconds!"
Matteo didn't hesitate. He popped up from behind the engine block, emptying half a magazine in a rapid, roaring arc toward the tree line where muzzle flashes blinked like malevolent fireflies.
Ramon grabbed Lily’s other hand, pulling her hard toward the edge of the rocky drop-off. "Hold onto my belt, Lily! Don't let go no matter what!"

The little girl nodded fiercely, her face pale with terror as she gripped the thick leather of Ramon's belt with both hands.
"Go! Go! Go!" Ramon roared.
