Chapter 9 - The Floorboards Speak

Ramon froze. He slowly lowered the satellite communicator, his gaze dropping to the heavy oak floorboards beneath the cot.

"Boss?" Matteo whispered, his hand instantly dropping to the grip of his firearm as he stepped closer.

Ramon crouched down, tapping his knuckles against the wood. Instead of the dull, solid thud of packed earth underneath, it produced a hollow, echoing resonance. There was a compartment beneath the floor—one that wasn't marked on any standard architectural blueprint of the cabin.

"Help me move this cot," Ramon ordered quietly.

Victor and Diego moved instantly, lifting the heavy wooden frame—along with the unconscious Elena—away from the corner without waking Lily, who had curled up in a small, exhausted ball beside her mother's feet.

Exposed beneath the cot was a heavy iron ring set flush into a square trapdoor.

Ramon gripped the ring and pulled upward. The heavy wooden hatch groaned against decades of accumulated dust and rust, swinging open to reveal a steep set of wooden stairs plunging down into a pitch-black subterranean room.

A thick, stale draft billowed upward from the darkness—carrying with it not the smell of damp earth, but the unmistakable, metallic tang of industrial electronics and freshly printed paper.

"Matteo, get the tactical light," Ramon said, his jaw tightening.

Matteo unclipped a high-intensity flashlight from his belt, flicked it on, and swept the brilliant white beam down the narrow staircase. The light caught the glint of steel shelving, rows of secure server towers, and stacks of manila files labeled with a familiar red stamp: ORTEGA-CALDERON JOINT ASSET ALLOCATION.

"It's not an old hunting cabin," Diego breathed, staring down into the vault in disbelief. "It's an active comms relay and financial archive. Someone’s been using this place as a ghost station right under our noses."

Ramon didn't hesitate. He swung his legs over the threshold and descended the stairs into the dark vault, his boots clicking softly against the concrete floor. As he swept his own weapon's tactical light across the wall, illuminating a row of glowing server banks, the main computer terminal at the center of the room flickered to life automatically.
