Chapter 10 - The Extraction Point

I stared at the glowing screen for three seconds before pressing the speakerphone button and laying the device flat on the marble counter.

"Tory," Ethan's voice echoed through the sprawling penthouse. It didn't sound broken, frantic, or fearful. It sounded calm, cold, and dripping with absolute authority—the exact voice he used when closing a multi-million-dollar corporate acquisition. "I told you that you never learned when to keep your mouth shut."

Liam stepped forward, his hand hovering near the phone as if he wanted to crush it under his heel, but I held up a single finger, signaling him to stay silent.

"You're not calling from a holding cell, Ethan," I said, my voice steady, carrying none of the trembling fear he had spent years trying to instill in me. "Julian just cleared your exit."

A low chuckle came through the speaker. "Julian is a businessman, Tory. He understands leverage. You thought your little forensic audit and your secret dossier were going to destroy me. You didn't realize you were just looking at the receipt for a transaction much larger than anything you've ever handled."

"You're selling out your own company, your own board, and everything you built," I said coldly.

"I built Apex as a shell, Victoria," Ethan replied, his tone hardening. "And you helped me build it stronger than you ever knew. But now, you've become an operational hazard. Which is why my transport is waiting outside the detention center right now, and by morning, I'll be in international airspace."

"You won't make it to the tarmac," Liam spoke up, leaning toward the phone. "The Department of Defense has a red-flag hold on every private airstrip in a three-state radius."

"Do they, Doctor?" Ethan asked softly, a chilling amusement in his tone. "Check your tactical net right now."

Liam whipped out his military radio, tapping the frequency channel for the local airfield task force.

Static hissed through the speaker. Then a flat, automated dispatcher voice broke through: "All units, stand down. Priority directive received from federal oversight. Repeat, all containment protocols for subject Sterling are cancelled under executive security directive zero-four."

Liam stared at the radio in absolute disbelief. "That's impossible. No executive directive can override an active felony terrorism and treason hold."

"It can when the man holding the pen is sitting in the same car," Ethan's voice came through the phone one last time, crisp and final. "Goodbye, Tory. Enjoy the empty penthouse. You wanted to audit my life? Consider yourself liquidated."

The line clicked dead.

Before the dial tone could even fade, the private elevator chime rang out once more—not with the red warning light of an intruder, but with the green, steady glow of an authorized federal transport clearance.

The heavy doors slid open.

Standing inside the elevator car wasn't an assassin, nor a security guard, but a uniformed federal marshal holding a sealed manila envelope addressed directly to me, stamped with the red seal of the Director of National Intelligence.

I walked slowly across the room, my heart hammering against my ribs, and reached out to take the envelope from the marshal's gloved hand.
