Chapter 5 - The Visitor in the Lobby

The silence in the penthouse was absolute. The digital display on the security console blinked red, indicating that someone had overridden the primary elevator security protocol using a high-level master keycard—a keycard that only Ethan, Marcus, and one other person possessed.
"Stay here," Liam ordered instinctively, his hand dropping toward the concealed sidearm he carried under his jacket as a senior military medical officer accustomed to high-risk zones.
"No," I said, my voice cold and steady as I slipped the threatening file back into my coat pocket. "Whoever is at that door came looking for me. Ethan is locked behind bulletproof glass downtown; he couldn't have sent this person himself unless someone on his outside legal team is running interference."
We walked side by side down the long, minimalist corridor toward the private elevator foyer. The polished brass doors remained closed, but through the reinforced frosted glass, a tall, shadowy silhouette stood motionless in the dim light of the hallway.
The chime rang out a second time, sharp and demanding.
Liam stepped slightly in front of me, reaching out to punch the manual override button on the wall panel. With a smooth hydraulic hiss, the heavy double doors slid apart.
Standing in the private lobby was a man I hadn't expected to see for at least another five years.
He wore an expensive, dust-covered tailored overcoat, his silver-streaked hair slightly disheveled from travel, and a cold, predatory smile playing across his lips. It was Julian Vance—Marcus's estranged older brother and the principal managing partner of a notorious offshore asset recovery firm based in Zurich, a man known throughout the international financial underworld as a fixer who cleaned up messes even cartels couldn't manage.
"Julian," I said, my hand resting firmly on the heavy metal flash drive in my pocket containing the master evidence dossier. "You're a long way from Switzerland."
Julian stepped across the threshold without an invitation, his sharp dark eyes scanning the opulent apartment before finally settling on me with amusement. "Hello, Victoria. I heard through the grapevine that my idiot brother Marcus and your charming husband managed to trip over their own shoelaces and trigger a federal investigation."
"They didn't trip," Liam said coldly, his hand still resting near his sidearm. "They committed felonies. And you're trespassing in an active federal crime scene."
Julian chuckled softly, stepping further into the foyer. He reached inside his coat pocket, pulling out a thick manila envelope stamped with a red confidential seal and tossing it onto the marble console table.
"Save the heroics, Doctor," Julian said, his gaze shifting back to me with a chilling intensity. "Ethan is finished, yes. Marcus is running for the border, yes. But you seem to think you've won the war just because you captured the king."
I didn't flinch. "What are you talking about, Julian?"
Julian smiled, stepping closer until the scent of expensive cologne and damp autumn air washed over us.
May you like
"Apex Development was never just a construction company, Victoria," Julian whispered softly, as if sharing a dark secret. "Ethan wasn't embezzling money to buy yachts or luxury real estate. He was servicing a much larger debt. And the people he owes—the ones whose money your little forensic audit just exposed to the federal government—aren't going to wait for a court trial to get it back."
Before I could answer, the security console in the hallway suddenly flashed violently, and every light in the penthouse instantly cut out, plunging us into total darkness.
