Chapter 8 - The Silent Partner

Julian didn't deny it. He simply adjusted the cuffs of his tailored shirt, his smile as smooth and untouchable as a glacier.

"Partner is such a vulgar word, Victoria," Julian said, taking a slow step toward the kitchen counter. "Let's call it an investment advisory role. Ethan wanted to build a corporate empire to hide his origins, and my firm provided the liquidity. But empires require maintenance. And when a CEO starts losing his grip—when he starts beating his wife in a fit of domestic rage because she's smarter than he is—he becomes a liability."

"You knew he was hurting me," I said, my voice dropping into a dangerous, icy calm that made even Liam turn to look at me with fresh concern.

"I knew he was unstable," Julian corrected smoothly. "I warned him months ago that marrying a former forensic investigator with a grudge was a tactical error. But Ethan was arrogant. He thought he could break you. He didn't realize that breaking a investigator just forces her to map out every single hidden vault in your operation."

The captured sniper was hauled past us by Liam’s tactical team, his hands zip-tied behind his back, a blank, expressionless mask on his face. Liam walked back over to us, his weapon safely holstered, his expression hardened into stone as he looked at Julian.

"You're under arrest by order of the federal task force," Liam said, stepping directly into Julian's personal space. "Your wire records match the primary conspiracy indictment."

Julian didn't flinch. Instead, he reached slowly into his pocket, pulling out a slim, gold-plated smartphone and tapping a single button.

Instantly, the emergency red lights in the penthouse blinked green, and the main building power surged back on with a loud corporate hum. The smart-home system's flat-screen monitors mounted on the living room walls flickered to life.

Instead of stock tickers or news broadcasts, every screen displayed a live feed of the federal detention facility downtown—specifically, Block 4, where Ethan Sterling was currently being held.

On the screen, Ethan wasn't sitting in a solitary holding cell. He was standing in an open administrative office, flanked by two armed correctional guards who had just unlocked his handcuffs, handing him a fresh jacket and a set of keys.

"What is this?" Liam demanded, staring at the monitors.

Julian slipped his phone back into his pocket with a satisfied smirk. "This, Doctor, is what happens when you don't understand how deep international jurisdiction goes. Ethan isn't being prosecuted by a local municipal police department anymore. His legal team invoked a national security exception under the Foreign Intelligence Protection Act."

Julian turned on his heel, walking toward the newly reopened private elevator doors.

"Enjoy your victory while it lasts, Victoria," Julian called back over his shoulder as the elevator doors slid open. "You took down a CEO. But you just woke up an army."
