Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

The conference room on the forty-fifth floor of the Apex Development tower hummed with palpable tension. Morning sunlight poured through floor-to-ceiling glass windows, illuminating the polished mahogany table where five members of the board of directors sat in uneasy silence. At the head of the table sat Marcus Vance, his tailored charcoal suit immaculate, though sweat glistened faintly along his hairline.

The heavy oak doors swung open, and all eyes snapped toward the entrance.

I walked in, flanked by two private corporate security officers hired by Liam's network, and followed closely by Detective Miller. I wore a high-collared white silk blouse that carefully concealed the worst of the bruising along my throat, though the faint shadow of a fingerprint lingered near my jawline. My hair was pulled back into a severe, flawless knot. I didn't look like a victim recovering from a brutal assault; I looked like an executioner.

Marcus stood up immediately, his expression shifting from corporate irritation to aggressive disbelief. "Victoria? What is the meaning of this? This is a private executive session. You have no clearance to be here, and frankly, after the hysterical lies your brother told the police last night—"

"Sit down, Marcus," I said, my voice cutting across the room with absolute authority. I didn't wait for him to comply; I pulled out the central chair opposite the empty seat where Ethan usually presided, sitting down with deliberate slowness.

"Mrs. Sterling," stammered Harrison Cole, the elderly chairman of the board and Ethan's longtime puppet. "We were informed that Mr. Sterling was... detained due to an unfortunate domestic misunderstanding. We expected him to handle this privately. Bringing police officers into a corporate boardroom is entirely inappropriate."

"Is it inappropriate, Harrison?" I asked smoothly, opening a thick leather portfolio and sliding copies of a forensic audit report across the polished wood toward each board member. "Let's talk about appropriateness. Let's talk about the two million dollars mysteriously funneled out of the municipal transit project escrow account last quarter. Or perhaps we should discuss the forged environmental compliance certificates Ethan submitted to secure our federal building permits."

Marcus paled instantly, slamming his hands onto the table. "Those are proprietary corporate documents! Where did you get—"

"I wrote them, Marcus," I replied, meeting his frantic gaze without blinking. "Every single line of code, every financial ledger, every architectural contract that built this company passed through my hands before Ethan ever put his signature on it. For three years, you helped him hide corporate fraud under the guise of marital privacy. But corporate fraud doesn't disappear just because you hide it behind a wedding ring."

Detective Miller stepped forward, placing a certified federal warrant packet directly in front of the chairman. "Mr. Cole, as of 8:00 AM today, the U.S. Attorney's office has frozen all corporate accounts associated with Apex Development pending an active federal investigation into wire fraud, bribery, and securities manipulation. Furthermore, Mr. Sterling's emergency bail hearing has been denied due to flight risk and active felony assault charges."

The room erupted into chaotic shouting. Directors stood up, papers scattering across the floor, accusations flying between Marcus and the terrified elderly chairman.

I remained entirely calm, watching the empire Ethan had spent a decade building crumble in real time under the weight of its own corruption.

"Meeting adjourned, gentlemen," I said quietly, standing up and smoothing my skirt. "Effective immediately, by virtue of majority voting control vested in me by the Vance Family Trust, I am invoking clause nine of the corporate charter. Ethan Sterling is permanently stripped of his title as CEO. And you, Marcus? You're next."
