Chapter 10 - Ashes of the Past, Dawn of a New Legacy

The gunfire that erupted across the grand staircase was deafening, a chaotic storm of lead and splintered wood that tore through the heart of the mansion.
Lorenzo fired with lethal efficiency, dropping two more enforcers before a grazing round tore through the sleeve of his jacket, searing the flesh of his shoulder. He didn't flinch. He vaulted over the marble banister, landing hard on the lower landing, coming face-to-face with Vincenzo himself.
Before Vincenzo could raise his pistol, Lorenzo slammed the butt of his rifle directly into the older man’s jaw. Vincenzo collapsed backward, crashing onto the marble floor, his weapon spinning away across the shattered glass.
Lorenzo stood over him, his boot planted firmly on Vincenzo’s chest, the barrel of his rifle pointed straight between the man’s eyes.
“It’s over,” Lorenzo whispered, his voice dangerously low.
Before Vincenzo could speak, the sharp wail of police sirens pierced the morning air from outside the gates—not private security, but federal law enforcement units alerted by the digital distress beacon Margaret had activated before entering the house.
Heavy boots swarmed the shattered front doorway. Federal agents in tactical gear poured into the foyer, securing the perimeter, cuffing the remaining enforcers, and taking Vincenzo into custody within seconds.
Lorenzo slowly lowered his rifle. He closed his eyes for a long moment, breathing in the smell of cordite and dust. The empire his father and mother had built on blood and deception was officially gone.
He turned and walked slowly back up the stairs, ignoring the federal agents shouting orders around him.
He pushed open the master suite door, making his way toward the safe room. The heavy steel door was already open. Teresa stood just outside it, while Margaret sat quietly in an armchair near the window.
And standing right beside the crib was Elena.
She was holding Matteo close, her eyes red from tears, holding the brass envelope Margaret had brought earlier.
Lorenzo stopped in the doorway. He looked at Elena—not as an employee, not as a nanny, but as the woman who had survived the very nightmare his family had created.
“Are you alright?” Lorenzo asked softly, his voice cracking slightly.
Elena looked up, meeting his eyes across the room. The tension that had held them captive for weeks finally began to dissolve.
“I know who I am now,” Elena said, her voice steady and clear. “And I know why I couldn't walk away from this house.”
Lorenzo took a slow step forward, stopping just a few feet away. He reached out, his hand gently brushing the edge of the blanket wrapped around his son. Matteo stirred, let out a soft, contented sigh, and reached out a tiny hand, his fingers curling instinctively around Lorenzo’s thumb.

Lorenzo looked down at his son, then back up at Elena. The walls were gone. The cage was broken. For the first time in his life, the future wasn't something he had to defend against.
It was something they were going to build together.
