Chapter 9 - The Siege of the Inner Circle

The black sedans didn't stop at the security checkpoint; they rammed straight through the automated steel barriers, sending sparking metal and shattered glass flying across the front courtyard.

Lorenzo reacted instantly. The paralysis of the family revelation vanished, replaced by the lethal instincts of a man whose world was under direct, unyielding attack.

“Teresa! Take Elena and the boy to the safe room now!” Lorenzo barked, drawing his weapon and checking the magazine with practiced speed.

“I’m not running anymore,” Elena said, her voice shaking slightly but carrying an absolute, unshakeable steel. She shifted Matteo securely into Teresa’s arms. “Take him, Teresa. Go.”

“Elena, no—” Lorenzo started.

“I need to know who I am, Lorenzo,” she interrupted, her green eyes locking onto his with fierce determination. “If my family’s blood is tied up in this house, I’m not hiding in a concrete box while you fight alone.”

Lorenzo didn't have time to argue. Heavy artillery fire shattered the front double doors of the mansion, sending splinters of ancient oak flying across the marble foyer as the assault began.

“Stay behind me,” Lorenzo ordered, grabbing a tactical rifle from the wall rack and thrusting it into Teresa’s hands along with Matteo. “Get to the master safe room. If I don't come back in twenty minutes, use the secondary escape tunnel behind the panic panel.”

Teresa nodded, clutching the infant against her chest with one arm and the rifle with the other, dragging Elena toward the private service staircase as gunfire erupted downstairs.

Lorenzo turned to Margaret, who stood remarkably calm amid the chaos, leaning on her wooden cane.

“You shouldn't have come here today,” Lorenzo said grimly.

“Where else was I going to die?” Margaret replied with a grim smile. “At least I get to see the house burn down.”

Lorenzo didn't waste another second. He pivoted, burst out of the study, and sprinted toward the grand staircase as the first wave of armed enforcers flooded the lower hallway.

Bullets chewed through the ornamental plaster moldings, raining white dust over the Persian rugs. Lorenzo dropped to one knee behind the reinforced marble banister, raised his weapon, and returned fire with cold, calculating precision. Two men in tactical black gear dropped instantly, their bodies hitting the marble floor with dull thuds.

“Vincenzo!” Lorenzo shouted over the roar of gunfire, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. “I know you’re down there! Come out and face me like a man instead of hiding behind rented guns!”

From the smoke-filled shadows of the foyer, a slow, mocking clap echoed upward.

Vincenzo Moretti stepped into the light, holding a heavy-caliber pistol, flanked by four remaining enforcers. His face was twisted into a mask of malignant triumph.

“You thought a private cargo flight out of the country would scare me away, boy?” Vincenzo sneered, raising his weapon toward the staircase where Lorenzo stood exposed. “The council doesn't run away from a house of lies. We burn it to the ground and start over.”

“The lies end today, Vincenzo,” Lorenzo said, his finger tightening on the trigger. “The hospital files are secured. The surrogate records are in my hands. The syndicate is finished.”

“Not before I take back what your father stole from us,” Vincenzo snarled, and signaled his men to charge the stairs.
