Chapter 4 - Breach at Midnight

The glass of the downstairs solarium shattered with a deafening crash, echoing through the hollow corridors of the mansion like a gunshot.
Lorenzo didn’t flinch. In one fluid motion, he handed Matteo back to Elena, his movements precise and urgent.
“Take him to the safe room,” Lorenzo commanded, pulling a heavy steel key from his pocket and pressing it into her palm. “Behind the false panel in the master walk-in closet. There is a secondary communications relay and a ventilated supply cache. Lock the inner deadbolt and do not come out for any reason until I unlock it from the outside.”
“And you?” Elena asked, clutching Matteo tightly against her chest as the infant began to stir from the noise below.
“I’m going to greet our guests,” Lorenzo said coldly, his hand resting on the grip of his pistol. He turned to Teresa, who had already pulled a heavy-duty tactical shotgun from a concealed compartment behind the linen shelves. “Teresa, stay with them. If anyone breaches the master floor, use the secondary corridor.”
“Be careful, Mr. Lorenzo,” Teresa said, pumping the shotgun with a practiced, lethal familiarity that completely belied her age.
Elena didn't wait. She turned and sprinted down the hallway toward the master suite, her heart hammering against her ribs. Behind her, the muffled sounds of shouting and heavy footsteps echoed up the grand staircase. The council hadn't sent a warning; they had sent an execution squad.
She reached the master bedroom, bypassed the massive mahogany bed, and threw open the walk-in closet door. Rows of tailored suits and designer coats lined the racks. She pressed her hand against the cedarwood paneling at the far left corner, locating the hidden release latch that Lorenzo had described.
With a soft mechanical click, the section of the wall slid inward, revealing a compact, reinforced concrete safe room lit by a soft emergency LED strip.
Teresa hurried in right behind her, pulling the heavy steel door shut and engaging the interior locking mechanism. The thick door sealed with a heavy pneumatic hiss, plunging them into absolute, soundproof security.
Inside the shelter, it was warm and dry. A small ventilation grate hummed quietly overhead, bringing in filtered air from the courtyard. A digital monitor mounted on the reinforced wall displayed real-time security feeds from every corner of the house.
Elena gently laid Matteo down in the cushioned crib built into the safe room’s shelving unit. The baby whimpered briefly at the shift in environment, but quickly settled back into sleep as Elena stroked his tiny cheek.
She turned her attention to the wall monitor.
On screen one, the grand foyer was empty, glass from the broken solarium sparkling under the chandelier lights. On screen two, the main hallway outside the master suite showed empty corridors. But on screen three—the western stairwell—two masked men in tactical vests were methodically clearing each room, moving upward with military precision.
And on the central screen, the feed from Lorenzo’s study showed him standing alone in the center of the room, his weapon drawn, waiting.
“He’s drawing them away from us,” Teresa murmured, her eyes fixed on the monitor, her knuckles white around the grip of the shotgun.
“Can he take them?” Elena asked, her voice tight with anxiety.
“There are four of them,” Teresa said grimly. “Professionals. Former contractors. Vincenzo hired international muscle because he knew local enforcers wouldn't dare pull a trigger inside this house.”
On the central screen, the heavy oak doors of the study slowly swung inward.
A masked operative stepped across the threshold, his rifle raised.
Lorenzo didn't waste a breath.
The first shot cracked through the audio feed so loudly that Elena flinched, clapping a hand over her ears. The operative spun and collapsed against the doorframe.
A second man rushed through the opening, firing blindly into the room. Wood splinters exploded from the mahogany desk as Lorenzo dropped into a tactical roll, coming up behind the heavy armchair. Two more sharp cracks echoed through the speaker. The second attacker dropped his weapon and fell sideways, clutching his shoulder.
“He’s too exposed,” Teresa whispered, leaning closer to the monitor.
Before the remaining two attackers could coordinate their breach, a third man lunged into the room from the hallway, his weapon leveled directly at the armchair where Lorenzo was crouched.
Suddenly, a loud metallic crash echoed from the ceiling above the study.
The security feed flickered. A massive cloud of plaster and dust obscured the camera lens.
Elena gripped the edge of the console, her breath catching in her throat. “What happened?”
“They breached the ceiling,” Teresa said, her eyes widening in horror. “They didn't just come through the doors.”
On the grainy, dust-filled monitor, the silhouette of a fourth operative dropped straight down through the plaster ceiling directly behind Lorenzo’s position. The man raised the butt of his rifle, swinging it down in a brutal arc toward the back of Lorenzo’s head.
Lorenzo turned just in time, blocking the blow with his forearm, but the impact sent his pistol spinning across the hardwood floor.
The attacker lunged forward, tackling Lorenzo to the ground. They rolled across the broken glass and splintered wood, trading vicious, silent blows in the dim light of the study.
Elena watched in absolute horror as the larger operative pinned Lorenzo’s arm, pulling a combat knife from his tactical belt and raising it high above his chest.
“No,” Elena breathed, staring at the screen as if she could reach through the glass and stop it.
On the monitor, Lorenzo caught the man’s wrist with both hands, muscles straining against the blade as it inched closer and closer to his throat. The attacker sneered, putting his full body weight behind the downward thrust.
In the safe room, Teresa raised her shotgun toward the reinforced door as if expecting them to breach the master suite next.
“Hold on, Mr. Lorenzo,” Elena whispered into the empty air, her heart pounding so hard she could feel it in her teeth.
On the screen, Lorenzo let out a guttural roar, using his legs to flip the attacker over his body in a violent reversal. The knife embedded itself harmlessly into the wooden floorboards. Lorenzo followed up with a brutal, crushing strike to the man’s jaw, rendering him unconscious in a single, decisive blow.
Heavy silence fell over the study once more.
On screen, Lorenzo slowly rose to his feet. He was bleeding from a deep gash across his forehead, his shirt torn at the shoulder, but he was standing. He walked over, picked up his fallen weapon, and checked the magazine.
Then, he looked straight into the wide-angle security lens mounted in the corner of the ceiling—directly at Elena and Teresa watching from the hidden shelter.
He didn't smile. He just gave a single, sharp nod.

Then the camera feed cut to black.
