Chapter 6 - The Weight of an Open Door

The afternoon sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master study, washing the room in a sharp, uncompromising light that refused to let the shadows linger. On the mahogany desk, the heavy manila folder Lorenzo had handed Elena hours ago still sat unopened, its red wax seal gleaming like a drop of fresh blood against the paper.

Elena stood by the tall arched window, looking out over the manicured lawns where two new perimeter guards in unmarked suits patrolled the perimeter. In her arms, Matteo breathed with a rhythmic, healthy depth that still felt like a small, daily miracle.

The heavy oak door swung open without a knock, and Lorenzo walked in. He had changed into a charcoal-gray suit jacket, but the white bandage on his left temple remained, a stark reminder of the violence that had rattled the foundation of his world less than twenty-four hours ago.

“You haven’t opened it,” Lorenzo observed, stopping a few feet away and nodding toward the desk.

Elena turned, adjusting Matteo slightly against her shoulder. “I’ve been busy keeping a very small, very demanding client happy.”

“He has good taste in caretakers,” Lorenzo said quietly. His eyes lingered on the infant before rising to meet Elena’s. “The contract isn't a trap, Elena. I don't operate that way anymore. Not after yesterday.”

“People who run empires don't hand out full autonomy and independent wealth to random employees without an endgame, Mr. Rossi,” Elena replied, her voice level and devoid of intimidation.

“Call me Lorenzo,” he said, taking another step closer. “And my endgame is simple: survival. For years, I surrounded myself with loyalists who knew how to handle guns, launder money, and bury secrets. But not a single one of them knew how to keep a child alive when the world was crashing down. You did. That makes you the most dangerous, and the most valuable, person in this house.”

Before Elena could formulate a response, the private intercom on the wall buzzed with a harsh, electronic chirp.

Lorenzo’s expression hardened instantly. He crossed the room in three long strides and pressed the receiver.

“Report,” Lorenzo ordered.

“Mr. Rossi,” the head of security’s voice crackled through the speaker, strained and urgent. “We have an unverified vehicle approaching the outer gate. It’s not a council car. And it’s not local delivery.”

“Who is it?”

“A woman, sir. She bypassed the call box and bypassed the intercom. She’s walking straight up the main drive on foot.”

Lorenzo’s hand tightened on the receiver. “Did she give a name?”

“She didn't have to,” the security chief replied nervously. “She told us to tell you that Room 417 isn't the only room with a ghost.”

The silence that filled the study was absolute. Elena felt a cold shiver trace down her spine. The name Saint Catherine’s, the mystery of Room 417, and the hidden surrogacy records were supposed to be locked away forever.

Lorenzo slowly lowered the intercom. His eyes met Elena’s, dark and burning with a lethal realization.

“Stay in the secure wing,” Lorenzo commanded, his voice dropping into the icy register of a predator preparing for a kill. “Teresa is downstairs. Do not open this door for anyone.”

“Lorenzo— wait,” Elena started, but he was already gone, the study door clicking shut behind him with a final, echoing snap.
