Chapter 2 - The Missing Ledger

The mention of the 2024 Ledger hit Dante like a physical blow to the stomach.

In the criminal underworld, currency could be tracked, wire transfers could be flagged, and guns could be traced. But the Ledger—the physical, leather-bound volume locked away in a private vault beneath the city—was the nuclear code of Dante Moretti’s entire syndicate. It contained the real names, encrypted accounts, and compromising records of every corrupt politician, crooked judge, and rival boss who paid protection to the Moretti family.

If someone had taken it, or worse, if they knew Harper had the key, his entire empire would crumble into federal indictments within forty-eight hours.

“Harper, listen to me,” Dante said, keeping his voice carefully level, masking the volcanic panic roaring beneath his skin. “Who took it? Was it the Russo family?”

Harper shook her head weakly against the pillow, a fresh sob catching in her throat. “No... not the Russos. It was someone inside our own perimeter. Someone who knew the cipher.”

The blood drained from Dante’s face. An inside job.

For three years, Dante had prided himself on absolute loyalty. He paid his men astronomical retainers precisely to avoid betrayal. Yet, the brutal attack on his most trusted civilian secretary proved that a parasite had burrowed deep into the heart of his organization.

“Rest, Harper,” Dante commanded gently, releasing her wrist. “The men who did this will not live to see tomorrow’s sunrise.”

He turned sharply on his heel, grabbing the evidence bag with the brass safety deposit box key off the tray. As he strode out of Trauma 3, his encrypted burner phone vibrated violently in his breast pocket.

He flipped it open while marching down the hospital corridor.

“Speak,” Dante barked.

“Boss,” came the gruff, panicked voice of Leo, his chief enforcer. “You need to get back to the headquarters immediately. The downtown office was hit an hour ago.”

Dante stopped dead in the middle of the empty emergency hallway. “Hit? By whom?”

“We don't know,” Leo replied, the sound of heavy boots echoing through the phone line. “They bypassed the exterior alarms without tripping a single code. They didn't steal cash, art, or hardware. They went straight to your private study, blew the wall safe, and left a message painted in red spray paint across your mahogany desk.”

Dante’s jaw tightened until his molars ached. “What message?”

“It says: ‘The Ledger belongs to the ghost.’”
