Chapter 3 - The Ghost from the Past

The word ghost hit Dante with a paralyzing flash of recognition that he had spent seven years trying to bury.

Seven years ago, before Dante had consolidated his control over the city’s shipping ports, there had been another syndicate operating in the shadows—the Vane Organization. Run by a ruthless, brilliant strategist named Julian Vane, they had controlled the financial pipelines of the eastern seaboard until a sudden, catastrophic federal raid wiped them off the map overnight.

Julian Vane had supposedly died in a fiery car crash fleeing the FBI. The case was closed, the assets seized, and the name faded into urban legend.

Except Julian Vane had a younger brother—a quiet, shadow-dwelling accountant who managed the Vane books and vanished the night Julian died. A man the underworld whispered about simply as The Ghost.

Dante didn't bother going back to his luxury penthouse. He climbed straight into his armored Mercedes SUV, slammed his foot on the accelerator, and tore through the rain-slicked midnight streets toward his financial headquarters downtown.

The city blurred into streaks of neon and gray concrete. Dante’s mind raced over the timeline. Harper had been intercepted leaving the office late last night, carrying a set of backup physical records to be filed away. She hadn't been targeted at random; she had been hunted because she was the only person besides Dante who knew the exact location of the safety deposit box key.

Which meant the mole inside his syndicate hadn't just leaked information—they had coordinated directly with the Vane remnants.

Within fifteen minutes, the massive art-deco facade of the Moretti Holdings building loomed ahead. Two black-suited enforcers stood shivering in the rain outside the front entrance, their submachine guns hidden beneath long wool coats.

They rushed to open his door as Dante killed the engine and stepped out into the freezing downpour.

“Boss,” Leo greeted him breathlessly, jogging down the marble steps. His face was pale, smeared with drywall dust. “Forensics are inside. We found security footage, but it’s been scrambled by an advanced loop.”

“Show me the office,” Dante ordered, his strides eating up the marble stairs.

They bypassed the elevators and took the private service lift straight to the top floor. The heavy mahogany double doors of Dante’s private study were blown completely off their hinges, splintered wood littering the Persian rug.

Dante stepped inside the ruined sanctuary. The air smelled of acrid cordite and charred metal. The wall safe—a three-ton vault embedded in reinforced concrete—had been cleanly cut open with a high-powered thermal lance.

And right in the center of his pristine desk, slashed across the dark wood in thick, dripping crimson paint, were the words: THE LEDGER BELONGS TO THE GHOST.

Below the words lay a single, chilling calling card: a silver coin stamped with a faded serpent eating its own tail—the exact insignia of the long-dead Vane Organization.
