Chapter 8 - The Empty Bed

The automatic sliding doors were jammed halfway open, their electrical power cut from the main breaker.
Dante and Leo moved through the dark, deserted lobby with practiced tactical precision, their boots making no sound against the linoleum floor. The smell of cheap coffee and copper had been entirely replaced by the metallic stench of fresh blood.
They reached the hallway leading to the emergency treatment floor.
Two bodies lay sprawled across the intersection of the corridor—Dante’s men. Both had clean, suppressed entry wounds right between the eyes. They hadn't even had time to draw their weapons.
Dante paused for a fraction of a second, staring down at his fallen soldiers. A muscle feathered tightly along his jawline. He stepped past them, his footsteps quickening until he reached Trauma 3.
The privacy curtain was torn completely off its overhead tracks.
The medical bed was empty. The coarse gray blanket was tossed aside, stained with a dark, sprawling crimson pool. On the metal bedside tray, where the brass safety deposit box key had rested just hours earlier, sat a portable laptop plugged into an open medical terminal.
The laptop screen glowed brightly in the dim room, displaying a live video feed.
Dante stepped forward and stared at the screen.
A sleek, modern warehouse interior appeared on the display. Bound tightly to a heavy steel chair in the center of the room was Harper. Her head was slumped forward, unconscious, a fresh line of blood dripping down her temple. Standing directly behind her, casually adjusting the cuffs of his dark shirt, was Marcus Vane.
Marcus looked straight into the camera lens, a cold, mocking smile touching his lips.
“I know you’re watching, Dante,” Marcus’s voice crackled through the laptop speakers. “If you want your precious gatekeeper alive, bring yourself and the 2024 Ledger to the old dry docks at Pier 44 within forty-five minutes. Come alone. If I see so much as a shadow of your enforcers, her blood is on your hands.”
May you like
The screen flickered, went black, and then the laptop’s internal hard drive hissed softly as a thermal self-destruct mechanism fried the motherboard.
