Chapter 1 - The Threshold of the Cockpit

The heavy cockpit door clicked into the open position, sliding back on oiled hinges that muffled the ambient drone of the jet engines. Captain Vance stepped out into the narrow aisle, his crisp white uniform and gold-braided epaulets catching the overhead cabin light. He looked annoyed—standard protocol for a pilot interrupted mid-flight—until his gaze swept past the rude passenger across the aisle and landed directly on my mother.

The irritation vanished from his face in a heartbeat, replaced by a look of profound, stunned disbelief.

He didn't walk; he practically bounded down the aisle, his eyes wide as he stopped right beside my mother's window seat.

“Colonel Hayes?” the captain breathed, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, instinctive respect.

Across the aisle, the man who had demanded we be silenced frowned, leaning forward to catch the exchange. “Hey, wait a minute, she’s just a passenger—”

“Sir, shut your mouth,” Captain Vance said without even turning his head, his focus entirely locked on my mother. He straightened to attention, bringing his right hand up to his cap in a crisp, military salute. “I didn't realize you were on this aircraft, Ma'am. The manifest listed standard booking classes, but... it’s an absolute honor to have you aboard.”

My mother blinked, her frail shoulders straightening slightly as a faint, weary smile touched her lips. She raised a hand in a casual, returning gesture. “At ease, Captain. It’s been a few years since I worried about flight manifests.”

I sat frozen between them, my heart hammering against my ribs. Colonel Hayes? My mother—who spent her days tending her garden and fighting a quiet, grueling war against illness—was a colonel?
