Chapter 6 - The Unmarked Black Sedans

The heavy Boeing 777 shuddered as its landing gear locked into place, the loud mechanical thud echoing through the cabin just as the wheels made heavy contact with the rain-slicked runway of Denver International Airport.
Outside my window, the view of the gray storm clouds was rapidly replaced by the wet tarmac of the arrival apron. But it wasn't the weather that made my breath catch in my throat—it was the three unmarked black SUVs parked directly in front of Gate 42, positioned in a tight, tactical formation that effectively blocked any standard jet bridge exit.
“Mom, look at that,” I said, pointing a trembling finger toward the window. “Those aren't airport ground vehicles. Those look like federal interceptors.”
My mother didn't even bother looking out the window. She was staring down at the encrypted satellite phone in her hand, her thumb swiftly typing a secure alphanumeric sequence into the encrypted screen. The small LED light atop the device blinked green twice, confirming transmission.
“They’re not federal interceptors, sweetie,” Mom said, her voice entirely calm, though the muscles in her jaw were locked tight. “They’re private tactical security units operating under a dormant defense logistics contract. And based on the positioning, they didn't come to greet us. They came to intercept the letter.”
The plane taxied slowly toward the gate, the engines whining down as the heavy metal bird finally came to a complete halt against the jet bridge. The ding of the seatbelt sign chimed cheerfully, instantly breaking the tense silence of the cabin as passengers began rustling their carry-on bags from the overhead bins.
Before the flight attendants could even open the cabin doors, the private intercom phone on the bulkhead began to buzz persistently.
Mom picked it up on the first ring.

“Hayes,” she said crisply.
Captain Vance’s voice came through the receiver, strained and urgent. “Colonel, we’ve got a problem. Airport ground control just informed us that federal transit police have been ordered to hold our aircraft on the tarmac. Furthermore, three armed private contractors just bypassed terminal security and boarded the jet bridge. They’re demanding direct access to your cabin.”
