Chapter 2 - The Manifest and the Mission

The flight attendant who had inspected the boarding pass stepped in closer, holding out the small blue slip of paper as if it were a sacred artifact.

“His name is Captain Vance,” the attendant whispered to me, though half the row could hear. “Your mother’s boarding pass wasn't flagged for seating, Ms. Hayes. It carried a permanent Department of Defense clearance code tied to active-reserve flight priority. When I saw the code, I checked the registry. Your mother commanded the strategic transport wing that trained half the veteran pilots flying commercial routes today.”

The rude passenger across the aisle suddenly looked very small. He shrank back against his seat, his fingers nervously tapping his magazine, realizing he had just tried to silence a decorated military officer.

“Is there a problem in this row, Colonel?” Captain Vance asked, his eyes finally shifting toward the man across the aisle with a look cold enough to freeze jet fuel.

“Nothing that concerns the flight crew, Captain,” my mother said softly, though her voice carried that unmistakable authority that had once commanded airbases and tactical briefings. “Just a civilian discovering that volume control is subjective.”

“Understood,” the captain said, turning back to me with a warm, steady expression. “Ms. Hayes, if you and your mother would prefer a quieter environment, we have the upper VIP compartment unoccupied on this aircraft. I can have the crew transfer your bags immediately.”

“Thank you, Captain,” I said, my voice still catching slightly on the shock of it all. “I think we’d appreciate that very much.”
