Chapter 1 - The Four Hundred and Eighty Thousand
The question hung in the stale air of the master suite hallway, toxic and heavy, pressing down through the ventilation grate.
“What are we doing about the $480,000 that was already drained from her secondary accounts over the last two years?”
My thumb remained frozen over my phone screen, the voice memo app actively pulsing with red, rhythmic waves as it captured every syllable. I was a senior risk auditor. I lived and breathed balance sheets, asset tracing, and financial discrepancies. Yet for two years, I had trusted Eric completely, assuming minor fluctuations in my secondary investment portfolios were mere market dips or automated tax adjustments.
Outside the bathroom, Eric’s voice broke the silence.
“That’s already handled,” Eric replied, sounding unnervingly calm. “Clara barely looks at those retirement-linked growth funds. She leaves them on autopilot. Whenever the quarterly statements arrive, I grab the mail before she gets home and shred them.”
Eleanor hummed in satisfaction. “Good boy. It’s about time someone in this family looked out for Richard and Sarah’s company instead of letting Clara hoard her grandmother’s inheritance like a dragon on a pile of gold.”
“And the attorney handling the corporate underwriting?” Richard asked, his voice tight with lingering anxiety. “Are you sure he won't flag the withdrawal pattern if the audit hits before we secure the $1.25 million line?”
“He’s my college roommate, Richard,” the unfamiliar man with the briefcase chimed in, chuckling lightly. “He only looks where I tell him to look.”
