Chapter 2 - The Counterfeit Signature

I crept down the back stairs in my bare feet, moving like a phantom through the quiet, sunlit hallways of the home my grandmother had built. Every step I took felt lighter, stripped of the heavy illusion of a happy marriage.
I slipped out through the mudroom door, circled the garden, and walked briskly down the driveway toward the main road. Evelyn was waiting on her front porch, rocking slowly on her wicker chair, watching the gray SUV parked down the street.
As I approached, Evelyn stopped rocking and looked into my eyes. She didn't need to ask.
“You heard them, didn't you?” she asked quietly.
“Every word,” I said, my voice steady. “They’re forging my signature for a $1.25 million loan using my house as collateral. And they’ve already stolen nearly half a million from my secondary accounts.”
Evelyn’s face tightened with grim satisfaction. She stood up and walked to the edge of her porch, handing me a heavy manila folder. “My husband kept a secure safe in the basement, Clara. When I heard Eleanor and Sarah bragging at the garden club last week about Eric ‘taking care of business,’ I pulled every public land registry record and tax lien associated with Nebula Systems. Your husband isn't just bailing out his sister’s company. He’s deep in private equity debt with a predatory lender operating out of Stamford.”

I opened the folder. Inside were copies of corporate debt filings, bounced promissory notes bearing Eric’s signature, and bank routing numbers linking directly to an offshore account registered in the British Virgin Islands.
“Thank you, Evelyn,” I whispered, sliding the folder into my leather tote bag. “They think I’m flying to Paris right now. I’m going somewhere much more interesting.”
