Eleanor turned her fury away from me and focused it like a laser beam on her son, grabbing Eric by the lapel of his suit jacket as the deputies watched with detached amusement.
“Eric, tell me she’s lying,” Eleanor hissed, shaking him slightly. “Tell me you didn't leave a paper trail. You promised me the house in Greenwich was secured as collateral!”

Sarah let out a piercing shriek, burying her face in her hands. “We’re ruined! Without that $1.25 million, the bankruptcy court is going to seize our personal assets by Friday! Richard, do something!”
“What am I supposed to do, wave a magic wand?” Richard yelled back, turning on his wife with venomous rage. “Your brother promised he had his wife wrapped around his finger! He swore she was too distracted by her own career to notice her accounts bleeding out!”
Arthur Vance cleared his throat loudly, stepping forward with a fresh set of manila folders under his arm.

Eleanor’s haughty expression shattered instantly. “You wouldn't dare. We are pillars of this community!”
