Chapter 9 - The Eviction Notice

“The only thing you’re pillars of is a collapsing pyramid scheme,” I said, walking slowly toward the door as the deputies finally moved in to secure Eric’s wrists behind his back.

“Clara, wait!” Eric pleaded, stumbling forward as the officers guided him toward the exit. “Please! Let’s talk about this! We can go to counseling, we can sell the Greenwich house and split the proceeds—just don't let them take me to jail!”

“You didn't want to talk when you were planning to frame me for abandonment in Paris, Eric,” I said, not even turning around as I crossed the threshold into the hallway. “Enjoy your stay downtown. You’ll find the accommodations significantly less comfortable than my grandmother’s house.”

As the deputies hauled Eric away toward the elevators, Eleanor and Sarah collapsed onto the leather sofa in the corner of the office, weeping hysterically while Marcus frantically tried to pack his briefcase and slip out the back door unnoticed.

Arthur walked beside me as we headed toward the lobby, sliding his tablet back into his leather satchel with a satisfied smirk.

“Well, Clara, that went swimmingly,” Arthur noted. “Though I suspect your mother-in-law is going to need a very expensive defense attorney by tomorrow morning.”

“Let her liquidate her bridge club funds,” I said, breathing in the cool, crisp air of the Manhattan-adjacent lobby as we stepped out onto the sidewalk. “She’s going to need every penny.”
