Chapter 1 - The Shattered Threshold

The metallic tang of copper hung so thick in the air it tasted like old coins on the back of my tongue. I didn't care about the young rookie blocking the doorway, nor did I care about the frantic shouts of Detective Sarah echoing down the narrow hallway behind me. My world had narrowed to a single, agonizing point: the muffled, breathless sobbing coming from the shadows of the back bedroom.
I shoved past the officer with a force born of pure terror, my shoulder slamming against the cracked wooden doorframe.
The sight inside tore the breath straight out of my lungs.
Sophia was huddled in the far corner of the room, wedged between a overturned nightstand and the baseboard heater. Her little pink sundress was stained with dark, crusty smears, and her blonde curls were tangled with dirt and dried tears. When her wide, terrified eyes locked onto mine, the sound she made—a pathetic, broken gasp of “Mommy?”—shattered what was left of my soul.
“Baby,” I choked out, stumbling forward on shaking legs.
“Don’t touch anything, Miss Parker!” Detective Sarah materialized beside me in a blur of gray trench coat, her gloved hands gently but firmly holding me back. Her sharp eyes darted around the room, assessing the devastation with the cold, practiced detachment of a homicide investigator.
Only then did I truly take in the rest of the bedroom. The walls were splattered with dark red arcs. A jagged kitchen knife lay abandoned on the braided rug, its blade dark and slick. And draped awkwardly across the foot of the unmade bed, half-hidden beneath a blood-soaked comforter, was a man's heavy arm.
Kevin.
His face was slack, his skin the color of skim milk, and a massive, gaping wound cut across his throat, pooling dark crimson onto the hardwood floor.
“Is he... is he dead?” I whispered, my teeth chattering as the horror of the scene pressed down on my chest like an iron anvil.
“EMS is on the way,” Sarah said, her voice taut as she knelt down slowly toward Sophia, keeping her hands visible so as not to frighten the child further. “Paramedics have been called, but right now, we need to get your daughter out of this house before forensics arrives.”

Before I could process the words, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the front entryway, followed by the sound of hurried footsteps and heavy tactical gear shifting in the hallway.
