Chapter 6 - The Trunk in the Alley

The harsh fluorescent lights of the hospital ward buzzed overhead, but the sound felt miles away.

“In the trunk of your car?” The words tore out of my throat, sharp and disbelieving, cutting through the sterile silence of the pediatric cubicle. I took a step toward Dante Moretti, ignoring the towering guards flanking him. “You kidnapped my sister? Are you insane? My daughter was just terrorized in a house covered in blood, and you’re telling me Amy is tied up in your vehicle?”

Detective Sarah’s hand snapped back to her holster, the metallic click of her weapon’s retention strap echoing like a gunshot.

“Mr. Moretti, you are digging your own grave,” Sarah warned, her eyes flashing with cold, tactical rage as she stepped directly into his line of sight. “Put your hands behind your back right now, or you’ll find out what happens when federal warrants meet local homicide charges.”

Dante didn’t blink. He didn’t even look at the detective. His intense gray-blue gaze remained locked on me, cold and unyielding as winter iron.

“Your sister isn’t kidnapped, Detective,” Dante said smoothly, his voice dropping into a register that commanded absolute authority without raising a decibel. “She’s breathing, she’s unharmed, and she’s currently reconsidering the wisdom of stealing three hundred gigabytes of encrypted logistics data from a man who controls every shipping container entering the East Coast.”

Behind him, Sophia let out a high-pitched, terrified sob from the examination table. The sound broke through the standoff. I spun around, rushing to my daughter’s side, wrapping my arms around her trembling shoulders while glaring over her head at the mob boss who had just upended our lives.

“Get out,” I choked out, tears of pure fury stinging my eyes. “Get these armed thugs out of a children’s hospital this instant, or I swear to God I will scream until every security guard in this building is standing in this room.”

Dante looked at Sophia, the rigid line of his jaw softening by a fraction of a millimeter. For a split second, something resembling calculated regret flashed in his eyes before he turned back to me.

“We don’t have time for a moral debate, Chloe,” Dante said quietly, sliding the heavy silver flash drive into his breast pocket. “If you want to know why Kevin is dead, why your sister sold you out, and what your grandfather’s land trust has to do with a cross-country war... you’re going to walk out those double doors and get into my car.”
