Chapter 8 - The Confession in the Rain

Amy squeezed her eyes shut, fat tears carving tracks through the dirt on her cheeks.

“It wasn't my idea,” she sobbed, her voice trembling violently as she glanced sideways at Dante’s cold, impassive face. “Two months ago, a man named Sterling from Vanguard Commercial Holdings approached my boutique. He said... he said the old family land trust in the Blue Ridge foothills wasn't just empty timberland.”

My heart skipped a beat. Vanguard. The same corporate entity tied to Bennett Hale’s fraudulent schemes up in Boston.

“What was it, Amy?” I asked, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

“It’s a massive underground transit hub,” Amy cried out, breaking down completely. “Grandpa wasn't a simple machinist, Chloe. He was a logistics architect for the Moretti syndicate decades ago. When he retired, he hid the master server blueprints and access keys inside the property deed. Sterling wanted those keys. He offered me two hundred and fifty thousand dollars just to copy the files from the home office safe while you were in Boston.”

I stared at my sister, feeling as though the ground beneath the car had completely dissolved. “You sold our family history for a quarter of a million dollars? You let that monster Kevin into the house where my daughter slept?”

“Kevin was Sterling’s man, not mine!” Amy screamed defensively. “He was supposed to get the files and leave! But today... today Kevin found out I copied a backup set for myself as insurance. He went crazy. He started trashing the house, threatening Sophia, and... and I had no choice!”

“You killed him?” I breathed, horror creeping up my spine.

“It was self-defense!” she wailed, burying her face in her cuffed hands. “He came at me with the kitchen knife! I twisted it away from him... I didn't mean to cut his throat, Chloe! I swear I didn't!”

From beside me in the dim interior of the car, Dante let out a slow, cold breath. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted satellite phone.

“Self-defense or not, your sister just handed Vanguard the exact digital signature they need to bypass the land trust’s final security firewall,” Dante said, his gray-blue eyes shifting from Amy to me with chilling gravity.

“Can it be stopped?” I asked, my voice steadying with a sudden, fierce resolve. If my grandfather’s legacy was the key to this war, and if my daughter had been put in the crosshairs of these corporate vultures, I was no longer a bystander.

Dante looked at me for a long, silent moment, assessing the change in my posture.

“Only if we go straight to the source,” Dante replied quietly. “The primary server isn’t in a bank vault or a corporate office. It’s buried beneath the floorboards of our grandfather’s old cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains.”
