Chapter 9 - The Mountain Road

The black Mercedes tore through the rain-drenched interstate highways of North Carolina, leaving the city lights of Charlotte far behind in our rearview mirror.

The city gave way to dense, rolling pine forests as we climbed higher into the misty foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The windshield wipers beat a frantic, rhythmic tattoo against the glass, clearing away sheets of mountain rain that battered the armored chassis.

In the back seat, Amy had been transferred to a secure utility van following behind us with Dante’s armed guards, leaving just Dante and me in the hushed, leather-lined cabin of the Mercedes.

I stared out the window at the looming silhouettes of pine trees rushing past in the dark. My mind raced with a terrifying mix of grief, exhaustion, and a strange, cold adrenaline I had never felt before.

“Why you?” I finally broke the silence, turning my head to look at Dante in the amber glow of the dashboard. “Your father was a syndicate boss, my grandfather was his partner, and yet here you are, tracking down a schoolteacher and a music tutor in a rainy hotel lounge in Boston. None of this adds up.”

Dante kept his eyes fixed on the winding mountain road ahead, his hands resting easily on the steering wheel of the powerful SUV.

“My father died six months ago under very convenient circumstances,” Dante said quietly, his voice devoid of emotion, though his knuckles tightened slightly against the leather grip. “The official police report called it a heart attack. My medical examiner called it a synthesized neurotoxin. And the men who orchestrated it are the exact same executives running Vanguard Commercial Holdings today.”

The pieces of the grand puzzle slammed into place with staggering clarity.

“Sterling isn't just trying to acquire commercial real estate,” I whispered. “He’s trying to finish a corporate and underworld purge that started fifty years ago.”

“And your grandfather’s land trust holds the financial audit trail of every illegal asset transfer Vanguard used to build its empire,” Dante confirmed, taking a sharp turn onto a narrow, unpaved logging road that climbed steeply into the dark canopy of the forest. “Which means by the time sunrise hits these mountains tonight, Sterling’s private security detail will be trying to strip-mine the cabin for those servers.”

The car bounced heavily over a rocky patch of mud, our headlights cutting through the fog to illuminate a rusted iron gate hanging off its hinges.

Beyond the gate, sitting at the end of an overgrown gravel drive, stood a dark, weathered timber cabin surrounded by towering pines.

It was my grandfather’s old cabin. And a row of heavy, unmarked black SUVs was already parked outside its front porch.
