Chapter 2 - The First Casualty

Eleanor froze, her hand hovering in mid-air. For a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine panic crossed her face as she looked up into Caleb’s towering, rigid frame.

Then her arrogance reasserted itself. She forced an icy, dismissive laugh, tossing her head back.

"Oh, please, Caleb," Eleanor scoffed, trying to rally the fading sympathy of the surrounding crowd. "Look at her! She’s unhinged. She’s keeping her late father's pension from her own sister out of pure malice. I only did what any protective mother would do. If you had any sense, you’d walk away from her right now before she drags you down into her misery."

Sienna nodded eagerly, stepping up beside her mother. "Yeah, Caleb! She’s totally unstable. She’s been hiding things from all of us for years—god knows what kind of lies she’s told you about her job and her background."

Caleb didn't blink. He didn't raise his voice or lose his temper. He simply kept his gaze locked on Eleanor, his jaw tightening into a hard, unforgiving line.

"Hiding things?" Caleb repeated softly. "Mrs. Bennett, you have no idea what my fiancée is hiding. Because if you did, you wouldn't be standing here running your mouth."

Before Eleanor could fire back a sharp retort, a sharp, rhythmic tone chimed through the ballroom.

It wasn't a casual ringtone. It was the secure, high-priority encrypted alert used exclusively by federal defense networks.

Across the room, three senior military officers—Colonel Harrison, General Vance, and Commander Hayes—simultaneously pulled sleek, matte-black satellite phones from their tailored suit jackets. They didn't look at the crowd. They looked directly at Caleb.

Caleb gave a microscopic nod.

Colonel Harrison tapped his screen twice, holding the phone to his ear. "Harrison. Go."

The room held its breath. The ambient chatter of the ballroom had completely died out, replaced by a heavy, suffocating tension.

"Understood," Harrison barked, his voice sharp and authoritative. He lowered the phone and looked across the room straight at Eleanor and Sienna.

"What is the meaning of this?" Eleanor demanded, her voice finally cracking with a nervous tremor. "Who do you think you are—"

"Eleanor Bennett," Colonel Harrison interrupted, his voice echoing coldly off the marble floors. "As of 200 hundred hours, federal investigators from the Department of Defense Inspector General's office have executed a comprehensive freeze and seizure order on all personal assets, corporate holdings, and undisclosed accounts linked to the Bennett estate."

The color drained entirely from Eleanor’s face. She staggered backward, her high heel catching on the edge of the carpet runner.

"A... a seizure order?" Eleanor choked out, her eyes bulging. "On what grounds?! We haven't done anything illegal!"

"You haven't, Mrs. Bennett?" Caleb stepped forward, pulling a thick manila folder from the inside pocket of his tuxedo jacket and tossing it casually onto a nearby cocktail table. The gold embossed seal of the United States Department of Defense flashed under the chandelier lights. "For the past four years, Sienna’s lifestyle and your offshore investments have been heavily subsidized by fraudulent grants routed through a defense contractor shell company. A company that was flagged for laundering military welfare funds."

Sienna let out a shrill, hysterical shriek. "That’s a lie! Mom, tell him it's a lie!"

Eleanor stared at the manila folder as if it were a venomous snake. "You... you can't do this. We are elite members of this city! We have connections—"

"You had connections," Nora interrupted, her voice cool, steady, and terrifyingly calm as she stepped out from the shadow of Caleb's shoulder. "You forgot one crucial detail, Mother."

Nora reached up, sliding the elegant engagement ring off her finger and letting it catch the light before slipping it into her pocket. Then she reached into her clutch, pulled out a small, laminated black card bearing a Department of Defense Level-5 security clearance hologram, and placed it right on top of the dossier.

"You always thought my government job was just a boring desk assignment," Nora whispered, looking her mother dead in the eye. "I’m not a civilian, Mother. I’m a counter-intelligence major in the United States Army. And the fund you tried to steal to bail out Sienna? It’s classified military property."
