Chapter 9 - The Web of Treason

The silence in the study was suffocating.
Caleb stared at the screen, his dark eyes burning with cold, concentrated fury. The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow—Arthur Vance, his mother’s former legal hatchet man, and Eleanor Bennett hadn't just been running a white-collar scam. They had been corporate assassins in suits, covering up treason.
"They murdered him," Nora whispered, the words tearing through her throat like broken glass. "My mother... she helped them murder my father."
"Major," Miller said softly, his voice tight with alarm as he tapped the keyboard. "Look at the destination routing on these financial ledgers. The money wasn't just staying in domestic shell accounts. A massive portion of these laundered funds was being funneled into a private security syndicate operating out of Europe..."
Before Miller could finish his sentence, the secure tactical radio clipped to his belt crackled to life with ear-splitting static.
“Command, this is Vanguard Lead at the perimeter gates!” a panicked voice shouted over the radio. “We have an unauthorized breach! Multiple unmarked black SUVs forcing their way through the front gates—they’re heavily armed, wearing civilian tactical gear, bypassing local police checkpoints—!”
Caleb moved instantly, drawing his sidearm from its holster with a smooth, practiced snap.

"Miller, lock down the data terminal!" Caleb barked, stepping toward the study door. "Nora, stay behind the desk."
"Like hell I will," Nora snapped, her grief instantly incinerating into pure, unadulterated combat rage. She reached into her jacket, pulled out her service sidearm, and checked the magazine with a sharp, metallic click. "They killed my father. They're not leaving this house tonight."
