Chapter 5 - The Hidden Vault

Caleb noticed the shift in her posture immediately. His relaxed, protective demeanor vanished in a microsecond, replaced by total tactical awareness.
"What is it?" Caleb asked, his voice sharp and low.
Nora stared at the glowing screen, her gray eyes narrowing as she read the decrypted report line by line.
"The tactical team at the estate just cracked the master wall safe in my late father’s private study," Nora said, her voice laced with sudden, chilling confusion. "They found the standard military decorations, his service ribbons, and the original deed to the house."
"And?" Caleb prompted, stepping closer. "What else?"
"They found a secondary hidden compartment behind the wood paneling," Nora replied, looking up at him with a pale, serious expression. "It contains a separate set of documents that my mother never knew existed. Passports, foreign bank ledgers, and a classified intelligence briefing addressed directly to my father—dated three days before his supposed 'training accident' overseas."
Caleb’s expression darkened instantly. Julian Bennett’s death had been officially classified as a routine helicopter malfunction during a joint training exercise in Eastern Europe ten years ago. It was the tragedy that had shaped Nora’s entire life, driving her to enlist in military intelligence to honor his memory.
"A classified briefing?" Caleb murmured, his mind racing through the tactical implications. "What kind of briefing?"
"The team hasn't opened the physical file yet because it's locked under a biometric override requiring a direct family bloodline scan," Nora said, sliding the phone back into her pocket and straightening her jacket with immediate, professional resolve. "They need my thumbprint and retinal signature on site before they can decrypt the drive."

Caleb didn't hesitate for a second. He reached out, taking her hand and leading her toward the private exit elevators.
"Let's go," Caleb said coldly, his jaw tight. "Looks like your mother wasn't the only one hiding secrets in that house."
